Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On June 12, 1955, the worst single auto racing accident occurred when a race car flew into the stands and exploded, killing 83 people, including the driver at this annual event:

Answer: Le Mans

Driver Pierre Levegn's Mercedes was struck by Lance Macklin in an attempt to avoid a slower car during this annual 24-hour event in France, plunged into the crowd and bounced back onto the protective barrier before exploding, sending more wreckage into the crowd.
2. On Nov. 28, 1942, the story has it that members of the Boston College football team had scheduled a victory party at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub. That night, an employee accidentally ignited a decorative palm tree, causing a fire. The resulting confusion in the smoke, combined with the front door being chained to discourage party crashers, led to the deaths of 474 people. Miraculously, none of the Boston College team was injured. Why?

Answer: They lost the game and cancelled the party

Boston College was trounced by underdog Holy Cross 55-12 and were too embarassed to show up. That decision saved their lives. Other saving graces in this disaster was the uncommon use of plasma to shock victims and use of the then unknown drug, penicillin, to burn victims.
3. The single deadliest fire in a single building occurred on December 8, 1863 in a Jesuit church in this city:

Answer: Santiago, Chile

3,000 people, mostly women and children, gathered for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The interior was decorated with over 20,000 oil lamps in niches in the walls. The fire started at a canvas and wood stature of the Virgin Mary and quickly spread.

There was little chance for escape as the only exit was the front door and it was inaccessible due to the panic. The fire claimed 2,500 lives.
4. On September 19, 1902, patrons of a crowded Baptist church were awaiting a lecture by George Washington Carver when a panic ensued, causing a mad rush to the exits. 115 people were trampled to death. What caused the panic?

Answer: A fistfight

According to reports, a fistfight broke out outside the church. A call went out, wherein some misunderstood the word 'fight' with the word 'fire'. The panic ensued from there.
5. In what community was it discovered a school and playground was constructed over 21,000 tons of industrial waste from the late 1950's through 1980?

Answer: Love Canal

From 1947 to 1953, Hooker Chemical and Plastics buried the waste in an unfinished canal in upstate New York named after the man who tried to build it, William T. Love. Through the period, heavy rains washed much of the waste from the canal through the school grounds into nearby homes. Over 30 percent of pregnant women miscarried. 20 percent of the children that survived pregnancy had birth defects and many died in infancy.

In 1980, President Carter declared Love Canal a disaster area and residents were evacuated.

It was declared 'clean' in 1990.
6. A bridge under construction in this city completely collapsed once in 1907 and partially collapsed again in 1916, costing nearly 90 workers' lives in the process:

Answer: Quebec

The Quebec bridge over the St. Lawrence River had a flaw in the initial construction plans that got worse as work progressed to the point it could no longer support itself. The bridge collapsed before the order to stop could be given. It is said all iron rings worn by Canadian engineers are part of one of the bridges' girders as a reminder of the disasters that come from mistakes.
7. A faulty piping system was blamed as the cause of the worst peacetime disaster in U.S. naval history when this nuclear submarine sank in the north Atlantic Ocean off the coast of New Hampshire on April 10, 1963:

Answer: Thresher

All 129 crewmen perished as the hull imploded when she exceeded crush depth.
8. On July 28, 1945, a pilot aboard a U.S. Army Air Force bomber became disoriented trying to land in Newark, New Jersey, and falsely declared he would try at LaGuardia, with the intent of diverting back at the first sign of clearing, when he crashed into which New York landmark?

Answer: The Empire State Building

The plane smashed a 20 foot hole in the 79th floor, killing 10 people. One engine penetrated a set of elevator cables, sending an operator 1,000 feet into a sub basement. She escaped with a broken back and two broken legs.
9. The first bubonic plague recorded as it happened occurred in the 6th Century over Asia Minor, Africa and Europe. This Eastern Emperor was saddled with having this epidemic named after him:

Answer: Justinian I

Although the plague had been known of since the 5th Century, the 'Plague of Justinian' decimated the city of Constantinople and got a foothold on Southeastern Europe to eventually claim 100 million lives, half the world's population to that point.
10. On May 25, 1979, a DC-10 lost an engine, severing vital hydraulic lines and plunged ten seconds after takeoff, killing all 271 people on board in the worst crash in the history of this major airport:

Answer: O'Hare (Chicago)

Investigators say that had the pilots realized the trouble with the engine separation and the damage to the hydraulics, they could have lowered the nose and increased speed to maintain lift in the wing and avoid a crash, but it was not to be. (My thanks to kylecole99 for this information).
