Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pierre Beauregard vs. Irwin McDowell

Answer: 1st Bull Run/1st Mannassas

Initially, the Union army was having great success, the battle was theirs. A stand upon Henry House Hill by CSA Brigadier Thomas Jackson calmed the Rebels and they began to counter attack. By late afternoon it had become a rout. The Union army fled back into the safety of Washington.
2. Albert S. Johnston vs. Ulysses S. Grant

Answer: Shiloh/Pittsburg Landing

The events of the 1st day left the CSA with the majority of the field and great confidence in finishing the Union off the next day. Grant counter attacked early on the second day and chased the rebels off the field. Johnston died during the fighting and the South lost one of its most promising generals.
3. Robert E. Lee vs. George McClellan

Answer: Battle of the Seven Days

Lee took command after Joseph Johnston was wounded. After reorganization, he attacked the Union in a series of 6 battles forcing McClellan away from Richmond to the safety of the James River and Federal gunboats. In one week, Lee completely destroyed Little Mac's confidence.
4. Thomas Jackson vs. Nathanial Banks

Answer: Cedar Mountain

Jackson's wing of the Army of Northern Virginia moving solo in an effort to feel the the Union Left, came upon Banks men on the field at the top of Cedar Mountain. Fierce fighting ensued and the Union had great success. Jackson rallied his men and they fought desperately to counter attack up hill.

In the end, Banks and his command fled back to their main lines, 20 miles away. Jackson returned to Gordonsville.
5. Robert E. Lee vs. John Pope

Answer: 2nd Bull Run/2nd Mannassas

The two day battle which had Stonewall bottled up, became a rout by noon of the 2nd day. Unaware of Longstreet's wing on his left flank, Pope charged against Jackson's position. Longstreet counter attacked and another rout at Bull Run was the Union consequence.
6. Braxton Bragg vs. William Rosecrans

Answer: Chickamauga

What was more of a battle of skirmishes in thick woods, almost became a rout against Rosecrans. Had it not been for the Stalwart defense of George Thomas, the Union Army of the Tennessee would have been destroyed.
7. Robert E. Lee vs. Joe Hooker

Answer: Chancellorsville

In arguably Lee's greatest battle, he sent Thomas Jackson on a grueling flanking maneuver with 70% of the Army. He smashed the Union right and pushed them back to the defenses of the Chancellor House. The next day, fighting continued until the Union withdrew across the Rappahannock and to safety. Stonewall Jackson was wounded by his own men on a night reconnaissance.

He died from pPneumonia complications from the wound one week later.
8. John Pemberton vs. Ulysses S. Grant

Answer: Vicksburg

After unsuccessful attempts to get at the Vicksburg stronghold on the Mississippi River, Grant finally marched south around the town, engaged in several battles, and attacked Vicksburg from the East. It became a siege that lasted 5 months. Pemberton surrendered to Grant July 4th, 1863.
9. Robert E. Lee vs. George Meade

Answer: Gettysburg

The 3 day battle from July 1st-3rd on 1863, was the high watermark of the Confederacy. Lee thought his men invincible. Day 1 was promising for the Rebels. Day 2 was a stalemate. Day 3 was destruction of the famous Pickett Charge. Meade stayed strictly on the defensive and repelled all of the Rebel attacks.
10. Joseph Johnston vs. William T. Sherman

Answer: Kennesaw Mountain

Sherman's men tried to scale Kennesaw Mtn. against well entrenched and elevated Rebel soldiers. After his defeat, Sherman never made a frontal assault again.
11. Jubal Early vs. Phil Sheridan

Answer: Cedar Creek

After initial success, the Rebels claimed victory and halted. Sheridan, just returning from Washington, saw his demoralized troops, made his famous rallying "Ride" and led them in a counter attack that drove Jubal Early off the field.
12. John Bell Hood vs. William T. Sherman

Answer: Atlanta

In a series of battles and the siege of Atlanta, Hood recklessly attacked superior numbers with little or no strategy. His blunders against a superior foe ended in the evacuation of Atlanta by the Rebels forever.
13. John Bell Hood vs. John Schofield

Answer: Franklin

After an embarrassing failure at Spring Hill to stop the Yankees from retreating to Nashville, Hood attacked Franklin in a full scale frontal assault against great defenses. Most of his general officers were killed, and his army was wrecked.
14. J.E.B Stuart vs. Alfred Pleasonton

Answer: Brandy Station

Growing over confident because of many successes, JEB Stuart was surprised by Alfred Pleasonton's attack which became a stalemate by battle's end. The Union finally had proven their cavalry was equal to the Southerners. It was and is to this day, the largest cavalry battle ever in the Western Hemisphere.
15. George Pickett vs. Phil Sheridan

Answer: Five Forks

Pickett's morning repulse of Sheridan's early attack caused him to believe the battle was over. He invited General Fitzhugh Lee to a Shad bake for lunch. As they were dining, Sheridan attacked and destroyed Pickett's command. Fitz Lee was captured.
