5. Robert E. Lee's greatest battle. Outnumbered 2:1, Lee defeated Joseph Hooker's huge army by dividing his own army in two and sending Stonewall Jackson on a crushing flank attack. The stunned Union commander was forced to retreat after 3 days of fighting.
6. George B. McClellan intercepted Lee's invading army and launched a series of disjointed attacks which resulted in a bloody stalemate. Lee was forced to abandon his first invasion of the North as a consequence of this battle.
7. Ulysses S. Grant's Union army was caught by surprise from a fierce attack by Confederates under the command of Albert Sidney Johnston. The Southerners were victorious on the first day, but the death of Johnston and heavy Union reinforcements turned the tide and enabled a Union counterattack.
8. Braxton Bragg unleashed a series of determined assaults against William S. Rosecrans' army. The Union lines buckled under the immense pressure but did not break. Bragg was forced to withdraw.
9. George B. McClellan left all tactical decisions to his corps commander, Fitz John Porter, in this battle. Porter held his position against Lee's furious assaults but was eventually broken and forced from the field. This was Lee's first major victory.
10. Braxton Bragg with his small rag-tag force launched a surprise attack against a much larger Union command under John M. Schofield. After initial success, Bragg did not have the strength to continue the battle and decided to retire.
