1. Discovery of Penicillin

Answer: September 28, 1928

Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) was a Scottish biologist, botanist and pharmacologist. During WWI Fleming witnessed the death of many soldiers from infected wounds. He spent the next 10 years trying to develop antibacterial substances. It was on September 28, 1928 that he discovered the world's first antibiotic or bacteria killer.

He was knighted by King George VI in 1944 and received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1945.
2. Fall of the Berlin Wall

Answer: November 9, 1989

The construction of the Berlin Wall was started on August 13, 1961. However, it was not until November 9, 1989 that the East German government announced that GDR (East German) citizens could visit West Germany. It was on this date that East Germans started climbing over the wall.

The official demolition of the actual wall began on June 3, 1990. During 1961 to 1989 it is estimated around 5,000 people successfully defected to West Germany with estimates that range from 100-200 resulting in tragedies.
3. Attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

Answer: December 7, 1941

It was on the morning of December 7, 1941 ( 07.48-Hawaii time) that there was a surprise attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service on the United naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This was a devastating attack of ships, planes and humans. It was this act that led to the United States entering WWII.

This act led U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaiming that this is "a date that will live in infamy".
4. Moon Landing

Answer: July 20, 1969

It was on this day that Apollo 11 landed on the surface of the moon and 6 hours later on July 21 that US astronaut Neil Armstrong took that first human step on the surface of the moon declaring "one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind". Buzz Aldrin joined him 20 minutes later. Mike Collins piloted the command module Columbia in orbit while Armstrong and Aldrin were on the surface of the moon.
5. The Russian Revolution

Answer: October 25, 1917

The dates are sometimes confusing as by the Julian or Old Style calendar it was October 25, 1917, however, by the Gregorian or New Style calendar it was November 7, 1917. In Russian history it is also referred to as the October Revolution. The Bolskeviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, plus the Soviet workers overthrew the government and the Tsarist Monarchy in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg).
6. Wall Street crash, The Great Crash

Answer: October 29, 1929

The Wall Street crash began on October 24 (Black Thursday), continued on Monday October 28 (Black Monday) and finally on Tuesday October 29 (Black Tuesday). This crash of the US stock market had followed the crash of the London Stock Exchange in September which combined, resulted in the beginning of the 10 year Great Depression.
7. The final closure of WWII

Answer: September 2, 1945

The war in Europe, known as V-E Day was on May 8, 1945 (23.01 Central European time). This was May 9, in Russia so they celebrate Victory Day one day later. However, war was still being raged in the Pacific and it was on August 15, 1945 that the Japan surrendered but it wasn't until September 2, 1945 that they signed the surrender agreement.

This surrender took place on board the US battleship USS Missouri. This date is called V-J Day and this unconditional surrender officially ended WWII.
8. Adolf Hitler appointed Chancellor of Germany

Answer: January 30, 1933

In the elections of July 1932 the Nazi Party won 230 governmental seats. President Paul von Hindenburg initially refused to make him chancellor, even after the second round of elections in November 1932. However, with Franz von Papen as vice-chancellor and a number of other top anti-Nazi government officials in responsible positions, Hindenburg thought he could contain or control Hitler and his brutal party. Little did he know! It was on January 30, 1933 that Hindenburg named Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany.

It was not long before Hitler made Germany a powerful, unified one-party state.
9. The first web browser (WorldWideWeb - www) was built

Answer: December 25, 1990

Tim Berners-Lee is an English computor scientist and he invented the World Wide Web while working at CERN in Switzerland. After only two months of development he completed the first build on a NeXT Computor on December 25, 1990. The build was circulated among colleagues at CERN before release to the public in August 1991.
10. The Munich hostage drama starts

Answer: September 5, 1972

On the morning of September 5, 1972 eight terrorists from the Black September fraction of the PLO gained access to the quarters of the Israeli Olympic team. They took eleven hostages but two of the hostages were killed immediately while trying to resist.

The hostage takers then demanded the release of 234 Palestinians and non-Arabs being held in jail in Israel. Negotiations were held and finally the gunmen asked for passage to Cairo. While at the airport a gun battle took place with the remaining nine Israeli athletes being killed, five terrorists and one German police officer.

The three surviving Back September terrorists were later released to Libya in October 1972 after it was stated that a Lufthansa plane was reportedly to be blown up, if the three survivors were not released by the German authorities.
