Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Tiberius' step-sister?

Answer: Julia

Tiberius' mother was Livia, married to Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Octavian). Tiberius' adopted father was Octavian, who later became the first emperor of Rome, known as Augustus. Tiberius' natural father was Tiberius Claudius Nero.
2. Who was Claudius' fourth wife?

Answer: Agrippina

Claudius' brother, Germanicus was married to Agrippina the Elder. They had a daughter, Agrippina (the Younger) who got married to Claudius. So she was his niece as well as his wife. Claudius' first wife was Plautia Urgulanilla, his second wife was Aelia Paetina, and his third wife was Valeria Messalina; Messalina was executed because she had performed (or playacted) a marriage ceremony between herself and a consul-designate, C. Silius; Claudius then married Agrippina (the Younger).
3. Who was Caligula's nephew?

Answer: Nero

Nero was the son of Agrippina (the Younger) and Caligula was Agrippina's brother. There were two Agrippinas, the Elder and the Younger. Agrippina the Elder was the mother of Agrippina the Younger.
4. How was Nero related to Claudius?

Answer: Nero was his step-son

Remember, Claudius was married to Agrippina (the Younger) and Nero was her son (by someone else). So Nero was Claudius' step-son. Nero was slightly mad.
5. Who was the second emperor and how was he related to Marcus Antonius?

Answer: Tiberius - he was Marcus Antonius' brother - in - law's step -son

Just complicated family trees. That's all that's to it! Let's explain this one then. Tiberius was the second emperor after Augustus. Marcus Antonius was Octavia Augusta's husband. His step-son was Tiberius. Complicated?
6. Julius Caesar was the first Roman emperor.

Answer: False

He was a dictator but never an emperor. The first emperor was Augustus. Julius Caesar did play a very important role in the Roman history, though. He lived from 100-44 BC.
7. Who was Titus' father?

Answer: Vespasian

Domitian was Titus' brother who succeeded him after he died. Domitian also built the Arch of Titus in memory of his brother. Titus destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD and brought back all their treasures and many Jewish people whom he made slaves. Many of them were involved in the building of the Colosseum - the Flavian amphitheatre. Vespasian was emperor from 69 - 79 AD.

He died peacefully after a brief illness.
8. Who was the mother of Julius Caesar?

Answer: Aurelia

Aurelia was married to the first Julius Caesar (the less famous one who was the father of Julius Caesar the dictator). She was the daughter of a former consul and outlived her husband by many years
9. When did Nero become emperor and whom did he succeed?

Answer: AD 54 - Claudius

Marcus Antonius was never an emperor. Caligula came before Claudius and Tiberius came after Augustus (the first emperor).
10. How was Germanicus related to Augustus?

Answer: He was his great nephew

Germanicus, aside from being Augustus' great nephew, was also his grandson - in - law since Augustus and Germanicus' grandmother were brother and sister. Germanicus's brother was the Emperor Claudius and his grandson was the Emperor Nero. His parents were Drusus Major and Antonia Minor
