1. What was Lenin's real name?

Answer: Vladimir Ilych Ulyanov

Lenin had many 'revolutionary' nicknames, mostly to hide his identity when he was in trouble with the Tsar's government, but this was the one that stuck.
2. Who was the so-called 'Mad Monk' that influenced the Tsar's family?

Answer: Rasputin

He had control over the family through his apparent ability to 'cure' (or least control) Tsarevich Alexei's haemophilia.
3. What was the name of the treaty that Russia signed to pull out of World War One?

Answer: Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

This was a crippling treaty, but it got Russia out of World War One, which they did not have enough money or resources to fight any longer, or the will to continue fighting.
4. What month did Lenin return from exile in Switzerland in 1917?

Answer: April

His "April Theses" set the basis for the new Bolshevik ideology and their aims for the revolution.
5. What was the name of the party that the Bolsheviks belonged to before they broke away from it in 1903?

Answer: SDLP (Social Democratic Labour Party)

The Bolsheviks and Mensheviks disagreed over party membership: Lenin favored a party of "professional revolutionaries", while others, including Trotsky, wanted a party with a mass memberships. This was one of the main reasons for the the split in the SDLP.
6. Who was the last Tsar?

Answer: Nicholas II

His father, Alexander III, was very harsh to his son, who was politically naive and unhappy in his position.

He had been an active revoluationary since his student days.

This system of 'dual government' caused many problems. Kerensky, the second Prime Minister, was a member of both.

Answer: Kornilov

He didn't succeed, of course, and this event provided the Bolsheviks with a leg-up in October - their leaders got out of prison and they kept the weapons given to fight off Kornilov!
10. What is the meaning of 'Bolsheviks'?

Answer: Majoritarians

Not surprisingly, the Mensheviks went downhill after they took their name - it meant 'minoritarians'.
