Castle Pinckney became one of the first POW camps of the war and was one of the few that was not a death camp. Prisoners from the battle at 1st Bull Run (Union name) were brought there.

When he was admitted to West Point he only had the equivalent of a fourth-grade education. He had good powers of concentration and good work ethics and rose in the class rankings.

Col. Theodore H. Barrett led a force that attacked about 350 CSA troops at the ranch even though they had done nothing to break the truce. Col. Barrett had direct orders not to initiate any action, but because of his ambition he would not allow the war to end before he had gained his share of glory. Col. John Ford counterattacked the Union forces, and forced them to withdraw.

They persauded Col. Barrett to refrain from further fighting, but his action had resulted in 30 killed and 113 captured.

The longest military tunnel built before this was 400 feet but had to be abandoned because the air was to stale to breath.
