However, it was still possible to cross from East to West Berlin. This gap in the Iron Curtain was closed in 1961 with the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, which caused much resentment in East Germany.

In 1989 the East German government found itself compelled to yield to popular pressure and allow its citizens to cross into West Berlin. A few hours later crowds began demolishing the wall.
