Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Much is not known about the Eblaites. When did their civilisation begin?

Answer: 3500 B.C.

The Ebla Kingdom flourished from 3500 B.C. - 1600 B.C. mainly in Syria. Urban culture began in the Ebla kingdom in about 3500 B.C. - 3100 B.C., but the first exquisite palace built in the Ebla Kingdom dates back to 2700 B.C. - 2400 B.C. In about 3500 B.C. - 3100 B.C. the Mesopotamian Uruk Culture also flourished. Eblaite was a western Semitic language, probably an earlier translation of Canaanite. And did you know that the Eblaites worshipped over 500 gods? Two of these were El and Ya which are the shortened forms of Elohim and Yaweh. Ebla was the capital city of the Kingdom of Ebla, a great Semitic empire in Syria.
2. In about 2400 B.C. - 2100 B.C. the Kingdom of Ebla dominated the region. Who were the "malikum" in the Ebla Kingdom?

Answer: kings

The Kingdom of Ebla dominated the region, from the Orontes to Mari to the Carchemish in the north, and they even dominated a larger area, from Kanesh in Anatolia to the northern border of Palestine. Ebla's "malikum" (king) was the elected leader of an oligarchy, made up of a few local governors. These governors were actually the powerful rulers of the Ebla Kingdom.
3. Name the king of the Ebla Kingdom in 2300 B.C.

Answer: ibrium

Ibrium decided that the Ebla Kingdom should be a hereditary and absolute monarchy. Unlike other ancient civilisations, women in the Ebla Kingdom were granted freedom, and they were pleased with their high status.
4. In about 2371 B.C. - 2190 B.C. Sargon of Akkad warred against the Kingdom of Ebla. Then, his grandson destroyed the Kingdom of Ebla which soon recovered. Who was he?

Answer: Naram-Sin

Naram-Sin was called, "King of the Four Quarters" (i.e of the world). The Kingdom of Ebla recovered, but was destroyed again in about 2000 B.C. At about that time, Ibbit-Lim (a prince of Ebla) helped the Eblaites and made Ebla the most important city in northern Syria.
5. In about 1900 B.C. - 1813 B.C. the Kingdom of Ebla traded with whom?

Answer: The Kanesh in Anatolia

The Kingdom of Ebla traded with the Kanesh in Anatolia who built an Assyrian trading colony called "karum". About 10,000 cuneiform tablets have been found over there. In about 1650 B.C., Ebla was completely destroyed, probably by the Hittites, and fell to the Mari (Amorites), who were once dependent on the Eblaites, but regained their independence when the Kingdom of Ebla fell.

It was all over... Thanks for taking part in the conquest, but I'm sorry: we're history. ;)
