Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was the Mitanni kingdom established?

Answer: 2000 B.C.

Mitanni was an ancient kingdom in north-western Mesopotamia. The kingdom was located in what is now south-eastern Turkey. It was founded by Aryans but it was later made up mostly of Hurrians. The Mitannians used horses, and were skilled in using chariots in battles. The Hittites learned how to use chariots in warfare from the Mitannians.
2. Name the capital of the empire of Mitanni.

Answer: Washshukanni

The Mitannians conquered Assyria for a period, then built an army to stop the Egyptians from invading Syria. Alalakh, Arrapkha and Kurrukhanni were also cities belonging to the empire of Mitanni, but Washshukanni was the capital.
3. What was the name of the Egyptian king who successfully advanced as far as the Euphrates and made the Mitanni king yield in 1450 B.C.?

Answer: Thutmose III

This forced the Mitannian king to send tribute to Egypt, and thus the Egyptians stopped their invasion.
4. Were the Mitannians later an ally of the Egyptians?

Answer: Yes

They became allies because of the Hittites. The Hittites were much stronger than the Egyptians and the Mitannians, and they had to do something quick. Friendly relations also developed because of a Mitannian princess, Tadukhipa, who was married by her father, King Tusratta to the Egyptian king, Amenhotep III in 1351 B.C, but he died two years later, in 1349 B.C.

She later married Amenhotep IV (Akhenaten), the thirteen-year-old successor to the Egyptian throne. She was about 17 years old then.
5. What was the main reason for the fall of the Mitanni Empire?

Answer: The Hittites defeated the Mitannians.

In about 1370 B.C., the Hittites defeated the Mitannians. A civil war also developed inside Mitanni, they were involved in struggles with the Hittites and they were later completely absorbed due to the Assyrian expansion.
