Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was the first trip by Columbus to the Caribbean?

Answer: 1492

Christopher Columbus (1450 or 1451-1506) made four trips to the Caribbean between 1492 and 1503. His first landing in the Americas was on an island in The Bahamas. He sailed to many of the islands, which he called the Indies. He seems not have been aware that America was a continent and not the East Indies.
2. Lewis and Clark were the explorers of the west. Which river did they sail on during part of their expedition?

Answer: Mississippi

They explored throughout the area acquired by the U.S. in the Louisiana Purchase, making many important discoveries, such as finding the Pacific coast, and making maps of the prairie and the Rockies. Sacagawea assisted them on this journey, having her first child, Jean Baptiste, along the way.
3. The Vikings were raiders and traders in Scandinavian Europe. What symbol did they have on the front of their massive boats?

Answer: dragon

The Vikings were medieval pirates. They took what they wanted, and traded it all over Europe for riches. They raided from the British Isles to European Russia. They flourished during the early Middle Ages and eventually turned to a settled lifestyle.
4. In 1917, Congress declared war on the Central Powers, two years after what event?

Answer: The Lusitania was sunk

The Lusitania was a British liner, and many American citizens were killed when a German submarine sank it. The liner was also carrying munitions from the U.S. to Britain, and one can argue that the passengers were in effect used as a 'human shield'. This fact was not of course disclosed by the British Admiralty. For the Germans, the sinking of the Lusitania was disastrously bad public relations as it swung public opinion in the U.S. against Germany.
5. During the Crusades, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine stationed many French ships off the coast of Asia Minor. What is Asia Minor called today?

Answer: Turkey

Turkey is a middle-eastern country that straddles Asia and Europe. Its capital is Ankara. It neighbors are Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Greece and Bulgaria.
6. There was a terrible storm down in the South of the USA in 2005. What was this storm called?

Answer: Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and a part of Alabama in 2005. A multitude of brave volunteers went to help clear it all up, but it hurt New Orleans and its inhabitants forever.
7. This Canadian bay is one of the biggest bays in the world.

Answer: Hudson Bay

Though initially centered on Hudson Bay and its tributaries, the Hudson Bay Company (founded in 1670) expanded and by about 1820 controlled a vast area of what is now western and north west Canada and even extended its traditing and political influence into the Pacific states of the U.S. as far south as part of northern California.
8. The island state of Hawaii became a state of the USA in 1959, having previously been a territory. What is its capital?

Answer: Honolulu

Honolulu is a beautiful, tropical vacation destination.
9. A tsunami hit in Indonesia in 2004.

Answer: True

The earthquake that set off the tsunami measured a 9.0 on the Richter scale. 200,000 people were killed, and 1.5m people were left homeless.
(See "I Wish I Knew That Geography" by James Doyle).
10. Charles Lindbergh made the first solo transatlantic flight in 1927. What was the name of the plane he flew in?

Answer: Spirit of St. Louis

Charles made history with this flight. Amelia Earhart would soon follow as the first woman to cross the Atlantic flying a plane solo.
