Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A book is usually divided into one or more groups of folded paper. These groups are called:

Answer: signatures

Pamphlets are usually made of a single signature.
2. Which type of signature binding is the most long lasting?

Answer: sewn signatures

Staples rust, often decreasing the value of the book. Comb bindings do not hold together well over long periods of time. Glued signatures vary in quality with animal adhesives being the worst, and acid free double fan adhesive binding being the best. The latter is incredibly strong.
3. Split board binding is best for what type of book?

Answer: large, heavy books

Split board binding is unbelievable strong. Books over a thousand pages can be held up by one cover and not break!
4. Which type of acid free adhesive is best for bookbinding?

Answer: PVA

PVA stands for Poly Vinyl Acetate. Is it acid free and remains flexible.
5. Which is NOT true of using an animal based adhesive?

Answer: the book lies flat when opened

Animal adhesives are extremely strong. Unfortunately, they are generally stronger than the paper from which the book is made, resulting in ripped pages.
6. What type of thread is used in hand bookbinding?

Answer: linen

Waxed linen thread is usually prefered.
7. What is the function of the headband in modern book binding?

Answer: to look pretty

In olden times, the headband was actually sewn into the text block. Today, headbands are merely adhered to the text block for an aesthetic effect.
8. What tool would you use to push out air bubbles when adhering the book cloth to the book board?

Answer: bone folder

Bone folders are sometimes made of real bone, sometimes with Teflon. They are also excellent at making precise creases in paper.
9. The piece of paper adhered to the inside cover (front and back) of a book is called a(n):

Answer: end sheet

End sheets can either be sewn in or tipped in.
10. What does "tipped in" mean?

Answer: adding a small amount of glue to one end of the page and adhering it to the page in front of it
