Euchre, Anyone? Trivia Quiz

Euchre is my favorite card game--if you play a lot, this should be pretty easy. Like most card games, there are variations to the rules. I've based this quiz on the rules most commonly used in the U.S. for 4 handed partner play.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many cards are dealt for each hand?

Answer: 5

It's one of the reasons I like the game--it's easy to hold onto your hand even when it's full!
2. Every dealt hand must be played (excluding errors in dealing and special rules like "stick the dealer").

Answer: False

If all players pass on the turned-up suit and again during the second round of bidding, the hand is not played and the cards are re-dealt.
3. What is the traditional method of keeping score?

Answer: Unused cards from the deck

We find it easier to use cards with a different back from the deck you're playing with so the score cards don't get mixed in accidentally.
4. What is the lowest card usually used in the actual gameplay of euchre?

Answer: 7 or 9

This seems to be a regional preference. My "Hoyle's Rules of Games" says 7, but most people I know play with 9's and up. Aces are used, but they are not the low card.
5. The ace of trump is the highest card which can be played.

Answer: False

No, the jack of trump suit is the highest card, and the other jack of the same color is the second highest. They are referred to as the right and left bower.
6. How many tricks must you take to win your bid?

Answer: 3

You must make three to get a point. If you get all 5, you get 2 points.
7. You cannot lead trump until someone has trumped a trick in another suit unless it is the only suit left in your hand.

Answer: False

Nope. You can lead trump whenever you have the lead. Whether or not it's a good idea depends on your hand.
8. Which of the following is a way to try to make the most extra points in euchre?

Answer: Playing alone

If you call the trump suit and "go alone," your partner doesn't play. If you win all five tricks, you get 4 points (instead of the usual 2 for taking them all). However, if you only make 3 or 4, you just get one point. There is no such thing as "no trump" in euchre, and you'd be foolish to bid before looking at your hand.
9. Which player gets to turn over the top card in the pile?

Answer: The dealer

After the deal, the top card on the pile is turned up. Each player in turn has the opportunity to name that suit trump. If someone does, the dealer puts it in his or her hand and discards another card. If no one calls that suit, the card is turned over and no one gets to pick it up.
10. What does it mean to "euchre" the other team?

Answer: To take 3 or more tricks when the other team called trump

Two points for euchre! And yes, you could take every trick and have it be euchre, but only if the other team had called trump.
