Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1980s the Haleakala Dairy on Maui, Hawaii introduced a new fruit drink. Because of its ingredients, their milkcap insert was known as a POG. What was in this fruit drink?

Answer: passion fruit, orange, guava

And that is how the POG got its name ...
2. In 1991, a Hawaiian schoolteacher remembered a 'flipping game' she played as a child using milkcaps and taught it to her students. Who was she?

Answer: Blossom Galbiso

Blossom Galbiso became known as 'The Mother of POGS'. Some of her students appeared on a TV show called 'Games People Play' in 1992. In 1993, entrepreneur Alan Rypinski went to Hawaii and bought the POG trademark from the dairy. (He also gave us the car protectant 'Armor-all').
3. In one variety of playing pog, players stack their pogs image side down and take turns trying to knock down the opposing pile to flip their opponent's pogs over so the image side is up. Which of the following is NOT a name for the pog used as the slightly larger and thicker 'hitter'?

Answer: eliminator

The pogs that are flipped over are removed, the remaining ones restacked, and the game goes on until all of the pogs are gone. The game can also be played using a time limit, with the player who has the greatest number when time runs out as the winner.
4. Pogs became collectibles. McDonald's had a 'McCaps' promotion with 55 different 'McCaps'. Why were there 55 in this collectible series?

Answer: one for each restaurant in Oahu

Pogs became great ways to promote things like sports teams, cartoon characters, super heroes, businesses and products. The 'pog craze' reached its pinnacle of popularity by 1995.
5. Approximately how big in diameter is a pog?

Answer: 1 and five-eighths inches

That's about 4 cm in metrics.
