Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This pipe is made from a South African gourd and a meerschaum lining.

Answer: Calabash

The Calabash is a gourd, also known as the Bottle Nose Gourd. Grown around the world its primary source for pipes have always come from South Africa. Over the years the supply has dwindled because the gourds are labor intensive and the work just does not pay out for the time it takes. So as a consequence less and less are made.

On a more trivial matter, the calabash is best associated with Sherlock Holmes. You know the one, the big sweeping pipe that is always shown in the films and book-covers. Well, here's some inside information, in all of the stories concerning Mr. Holmes, not a single mention of a calabash pipe exists! The pipes mentioned are briarwood and cherrywood but not a single claim to the calabash.

An interesting how-to: http://www.geocities.com/pipetabor/calabash/calabash_e.html
2. What is meerschaum?

Answer: fossilized shells

The most largest amount of this substance is in the plain of Eskisehir, Turkey, but it also occurs in France, Greece, and the U.S. It's actually soft when mined but it hardens after being on the surface.
3. Which pipe shape shares its name with a popular pub game?

Answer: Billiard

It's been suggested that the name derives from a billiard ball, it being round like the bowl of this pipe. Incidentally, Bing Crosby was most notable smoking this style.
4. This pipe shares its name with an English port?

Answer: Liverpool

This one is not so easy to nail down as to why it got its name. The best I can guess is that several hundred years ago clay pipes were made here and they had a good reputation, and somewhere along the line they were credited with this particular design.
5. Although this pipe never hosted a 1960s hippie music festival, it does have the same name as one!

Answer: Woodstock

Lollapalooza is a traveling American music festival that touts alternative music bands. It's not my scene but I love the way it sounds on the tongue. It's however not a type of pipe! Briarwood and Greenwood are pipes, but there was no festival of either of these names.
6. Which pipe has a 'royal' name?

Answer: Prince

Basically in the tradition of an Apple, but with a squarish bowl and shorter stem. It was named for the Prince of Wales because it was his favorite.
7. This pipe gets its name from a breed of dog?

Answer: Bulldog

When you see the pipe the name makes sense. It's short and pug just like the dog.
8. Among pipe aficionados, which country is known for its freehand carvers?

Answer: Denmark

Bo Nordh, Peter Heeschen, and Lars Ivarsson are just a few masters of the style. The style incidentally is now no longer limited to Danish carvers.
9. You might find this pipe in the United Nations.

Answer: Diplomat

Regarding nomenclature, the only thing that varies between a prince and a diplomat is the oval stem on the diplomat and the round stem on the prince.
10. A pipe dedicated to the South African general of the Boer War and later president Kruger.

Answer: Oom Paul

"Oom" means "uncle' in Afrikaans, Paul was the President's first name.
11. Perhaps James Joyce enjoyed this pipe?

Answer: Dublin

I'm being a bit silly here, borrowing from the author's book 'The Dub liners'.
12. You might see this one in the rectory.

Answer: Church Warden

Interestingly enough, all of the other styles of pipes are identified by their shapes of bowls, but the churchwarden is identified by its long stem. This style really has had a comeback with Gandalf smoking one in 'Lord of the Rings'.
13. Based on the old Tyrolean pipes of Germany, this is what you would ask for if ordering one today.

Answer: Cavalier

What makes this pipe unique is the 'foot' or collecting area for moisture i.e. spit, and generally it has a cap to drain said moisture.
14. MEERSCHAUM: A German word meaning literally_______________.

Answer: sea-foam

The majority of Meerschaum is found in Turkey in under ground caves.
15. General Douglas MacArthur was known for smoking what style of pipe?

Answer: Corn cob

My favorite quote from him is "We are not retreating - we are advancing in another direction" but he is better known for "I shall return". His favorite pipe, while made by the Missouri Meerschaum company, was actually a corn cob pipe.
16. Perhaps you would find this pipe in the liquor cabinet?

Answer: Brandy

Why Brandy? Because brandy has a bowl shaped like, well, like a brandy glass. Sometimes there are simple reasons for the name!
17. The tool used to compress the tobacco down in the bowl is known as a ________?

Answer: Tamper

My personal favorite is a 12d galvanized roofing nail flattened on the end.
18. This type might be found on the top of a house.

Answer: Chimney

Perhaps this is where the phrase "smokes like a chimney came from".
19. This pipe maker identifies each pipe with a four digit serial number to describe its features. Who is the company?

Answer: Dunhill

Dunhill pipes fetch the greatest prices around, they are said to be the 'Rolls Royce's' of the market and command thousands of dollars for just one!
20. This manufacturer operates out of the Emerald Isle?

Answer: Peterson

Peterson's makes an excellent pipe, but if it proves too costly they offer their blemished ones under the marking "Seconds", which are an excellent value.
