Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I just bought this really cool notion. It's called a Gypsy Gripper, but what does it "grip" onto?

Answer: Rulers

Gypsy Grippers look like a handle with suction cups attached to the ends. You can "seal" the suction cups and they'll hold onto your plastic rulers. It's very handy for very small rulers.
2. Sewing rulers come in which of the following sizes?

Answer: All of these sizes

Sewing rules come in a variety of shapes and styles. They are made by several different companies such as: Omnigrids, Creative Grids, and Olfa (who also makes very nice rotary-cutters).
3. There is a difference between scissors and shears.

Answer: Yes

Shears are made to specifically cut fabric, while scissors are made to cut papers and the like. If you try to cut fabric with scissors, you'll struggle forever, and if you cut paper with shears, it'll dull them.
4. Oh no! I've accidentally poked a hole in my pincushion with my shears. Curiosity got to me and I peeked inside. What should be inside of my pincushion?

Answer: Any of these

If you've made your own pincushion, it might have old scraps of cotton or wool in it. It keeps the pincushion lightweight and squishy, or if you buy your pincushion from a store, it's filled with sand to keep the pins sharp.
5. Uh oh. My seams keep fraying. Which colorful notion could help me finish off the seams so they won't fray anymore?

Answer: Pinking Shears

Pinking shears, of course! They look like regular shears but the blades have a zigzag pattern on them. When you finish a garment, trim the raw seams with pinking shears and you won't have tons of thread!
6. I'm shopping for needles, which one of these brands couldn't help me out with my sewing?

Answer: Berroco

Berroco creates the Handeze Therapeutic Gloves, which I think that I might need after doing all this sewing!
7. One of my favorite notions is a Mat Smoother by Tri-Sharp. Contrary to the name, it doesn't "smooth" the mat (you can't feel the difference), but it rather "renews" it. How does it do this?

Answer: Removes the strands of fabric that become lodged in the mat

When cutting fabric, many different strands of fabric get lodged in the mat creating ridges. These can't be felt by hand, but disrupt the flow of the rotary cutter. The Mat Smoother keeps the strands off the mat. Tri-Sharp also created a Lint Magnet that does almost the same thing.
8. How often should you replace your rotary cutter blade?

Answer: When it begins to skip

You should replace your rotary cutter blade whenever it gets dull or skips. Skipping is when you cut fabric, but the blade doesn't cut through the whole length of fabric, and leaves parts of fabric still attached to the original piece. This is when you should replace your blade.
9. What is a tailoring ham?

Answer: An ironing tool that allows you to iron curved seams and darts

I have no idea where they get the name, but it sure is helpful! You can now easily press collars and shoulders without creating awkward bumps!
10. When marking on fabric you'd most likely use chalk or a marking pencil. However, my grandmother taught me how to sew and she would always tell me to mark my fabric with this. Yes or no, is it true that you can mark fabric with soap?

Answer: Yes

Of course! When a bar of soap was just shavings, she'd dry them out in the sun for a day and then use them just like chalk. The residue wipes off or washes out, so there's no chance of staining!
