Caleb was a pharmacist who owned a drug store and had a soda fountain there for his customers, located in New Bern, North Carolina. He began experimenting with different concoctions of ingredients and came up with a flavor to everyone's liking.

It was known as Brad's Drink until August 28, 1898, when the name was changed to Pepsi-Cola.

According to pepsi.com, Caleb bought the name "Pep Kola" from a local competitor and changed it to Pepsi-Cola. The new name, Pepsi-Cola, is derived from two of the principal ingredients, pepsin and kola nuts.
