Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sigurd begins to speak. "This story begins before my birth; on the day of the great wedding feast for my father's twin sister, Signy, and Siggeir, the lord of the Goths. At the feast, a poor stranger appeared grasping a great sword which he plunged into the tree Branstock. He declared that the man who could retrieve it could call it his own. It was my father who achieved this feat after all had failed. But who was that stranger in disguise?"

Answer: The one-eyed Odin.

"Yes, it was indeed our excellent host," says Sigurd, "but he might as well have been that rogue Loki, for all the trouble he caused! Siggeir coveted Odin's sword and swore that it would come to be his. He became the enemy of my family, and in the end, the destroyer."
2. "After the Goths attacked and seized the sword of Branstock, all but my father, Sigmund, were slain in battle." Sigurd bows his head. "Siggeir became King, but his wife, Signy, was secretly on my father's side. She did many things to aid him in his revenge - which did she not do for him?"

Answer: Slipped a sleeping draught into Siggeir's wine so that Sigmund could enter unnoticed.

"Signy was a virtuous woman who always remained loyal - even to her treacherous husband. She never actually conspired against him, but simply saved my father each time he needed saving."
3. Sigurd continues. "My father defeated Siggeir and was crowned King. He married but his first wife soon died. He then married my mother, Hiordis - but this marriage angered her other suitor, who was the young king of a nearby realm. In his fury, he declared war. Can you name him?"

Answer: His name was Lyngi.

"That war cost me my father. At the fiercest moment of battle, the same ragged stranger that had given him his sword appeared brandishing a huge spear. Sigmund lunged with the sword, but it shattered into three pieces as it struck its creator, and weaponless, he perished."
4. "The sword-bearing beggar man appeared to me and my father several times," says Sigurd. "He once brought me to a place where many wild horses grazed, to show me the horse that should be mine - a beautiful, powerful grey stallion. Do you know what name I gave to my horse?"

Answer: Greyfell

"He was named for his storm-coloured coat. The horse was a descendant of the eight-legged Sleipnir, Odin's own noble steed. In fact, they tell me that Sleipnir was a son of Loki! He has sired some strange children!"
5. "I grew up an apprentice to the famous dwarf blacksmith, Regin," Sigurd recounts. "He taught me to read the runes and speak in many languages, versed me in magic and taught me music. He and his two brothers were shapeshifters and sons of Reidmar. What kind of being was Reidmar?"

Answer: An Ancient

"He was lesser than a god but greater than a man, and had strange and fantastic abilities. He passed on many great powers to his sons. To the eldest, Fafnir, he gave a fearless soul, a cunning hand and a stubborn heart. To Otter, he gave the power to hunt and catch any creature, as wild as it may be. To Regin he gave skill in every craft, the gift of foresight and a heart that would never know peace."
6. "It was Regin, my tutor, who sent me on my journey to slay the dragon Fafnir and regain the great treasure hoard which he guarded." Sigurd gestures to demonstrate the vastness of the treasure. "He told me the story of the curse which had worked against the treasure's previous owner so that Fafnir had killed him and taken it for himself. Who was Fafnir?"

Answer: Regin's transformed brother

"The story of how Fafnir came to guard Andvari's treasure is this: One day, the gods Odin, Haednir and Loki were hunting in the woods. They came across an otter and Loki killed it - but the otter turned out to have been a son of Reidmar who demanded a ransom for the crime - the vast treasures of Andvari the dwarf. Using trickery, the gods obtained the treasure, but Andvari warned them that one piece - a ring - was cursed and would bring disaster.

When the gods brought the treasure to Reidmar they warned him of the curse, but he took the ring anyway.

The curse began working straight away. Reidmar's son Fafnir grew so envious of his father's treasure that he slaughtered him and took it for his own. He transformed himself into an immense dragon and stole away to a rocky cave where he remained, to guard his ill-gotten hoard."
7. "I was approached again by the mysterious beggar man who gave me advice on how to defeat the dragon. There was only one way." Sigurd looks around at the faces of his audience. "Do you know how I did it?"

Answer: Hide in a hole, wait for the dragon to slither over it, and stab his soft underbelly

"This I did, and into the hole poured Fafnir's magical blood, in which I bathed. It made me invulnerable everywhere it touched my skin."
8. Sigurd goes on. "When the monster was slain, Regin came to me and asked that I roast its heart so that he may eat of it and grow wise. But all the time, he was plotting to kill me. How did I learn of this and manage to save myself?"

Answer: You swallowed a drop of Fafnir's blood and it gave you the language of the birds, who spoke of Regin's plotting.

"Yes, after that moment, I could understand the speech of birds and beasts. Eagles circled above me, talking of Regin's plans and thus prepared me for his teachery. I turned to see him ready to attack, and cut his head from his shoulders. Later as I began to gather the treasure, the eagles spoke again, telling me to leave the treasure and go to Hindfell, where a greater treasure lay."
9. "My one true love was in a deep enchanted sleep on the mountain Hindfell when I discovered her," Sigurd says, his voice becoming wistful and his eyes filling with beautiful memories. "She had been sent there by Odin, to slumber until a mortal man came to wake her. She would have to marry whoever that man might be. What had she done to incur Odin's wrath?"

Answer: She was a Valkyrie who had allowed the wrong man to win a battle

"She was born of mortal folk, but called up to Valhalla to become one of Odin's warrior maidens - a Valkyrie. She would watch over battles between men, choose winners and take the losers to their paradise right here in the great halls of Valhalla. After angering Odin, she was sent to the mountain where I found her. We fell in love and I wed her there, giving her Andvari's ring as a wedding token.

But it was still cursed and we were to part after that, to meet again only as strangers."
10. Sigurd's tale nears its end. He says, "I married twice, to my second wife while my first still lived. Do you know the name of my second and final wife?"

Answer: Gudrun

"I was spellstruck by the witch queen Grimhild, who bewitched me into loving her daughter Gudrun, who I married. Gudrun was a good and beautiful woman, but it was not true love. Brynhild was deceived into wedding Grimhild's son, Gunnar. I was slain by Gunnar's brothers, and my body was burnt on a huge funeral pyre. Only then did Brynhild recognise me as her true love, and died with me in the flames." Blinking away the moisture in his eyes, he raises his empty goblet high. "So let us drink a health to my sweetheart - with another round of mead!"
