Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Aristotle born?

Answer: Stagira

Aristotle was not a native of Athens, but went there when he was 17 to study at Plato's Academy. We don't know if he ever went to Corinth or Thebes, but he definitely wasn't born in either of those places. So Stagira it is!
2. Aristotle is considered the founder of what?

Answer: Modern Biology

As Jostein Gaarder says, Aristotle was 'Europe's first great biologist'.
3. Which IS NOT one of the categories of Aristotle's ponderance?

Answer: An Immortal Soul

Plato pondered if there is 'an immortal soul', not Aristotle.
4. What does Aristotle think came first?

Answer: Neither

Aristotle believed that neither the chicken or the egg came first, but the IDEA 'chicken'.
5. According to Aristotle, which of these things is the difference between humans and animals?

Answer: The ability to think

Not that animals can do any of those things (although they do have tails), but Aristotle believed that the difference between animals and humans is the ability to think and reason.
6. What IS NOT one of the 'three forms of happiness' described by Aristotle?

Answer: Life as a student of nature

Aristotle did not believe that a 'life as a student of nature' is one of the three types of happiness.
7. What did Aristotle advocate as a way of achieving balance in life?

Answer: The Golden Mean

8. What IS NOT one of Aristotle's three forms of constitutional government?

Answer: Oligarchy

Actually, Aristotle warned that under bad rule, Aristocracy could turn into an oligarchy.
9. Which IS NOT a reason that Aristotle thought that women were 'unfinished men'?

Answer: Women have little appreciation for the arts and sciences

Aristotle was convinced that children were like plants. The males were the sowers, their sperm the seed, but women were just the receptive soil. He believed that children only inherit male characteristics because a flower inherits the characteristics of the seed, NOT the soil. Women contribute 'substance', which is like the body of a dead chicken, which cannot even be called 'chicken' because it has only the substance and not the form.

In this way, women only contribute 'substance' to children, not 'form', so not having what women give them will only cause them to cease existing in the earthly life, not in idea or 'form'.
10. What is the final cause of rainfall, according to Aristotle?

Answer: It rains so plants and creatures can survive
