Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With which musical would you associate "Don Juan Triumphant"?

Answer: The Phantom Of The Opera

"Don Juan Triumphant" is the opera that the Phantom writes and demands that the opera company performs - the leading part, obviously, being written for Christine.
2. Demeter is a character in which musical?

Answer: Cats

Demeter's role is considered a major part. She is one of the adult queens of the show and is usually partnered with Alonzo but a few productions show her as the mate of Munkustrap.

She sings "Macavity", with Bombalurina, part of "Grizabella the Glamour Cat" and is in the backing group for "The Gumbie Cat."

She is also mentioned in "The Naming Of Cats" :

"There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames
Such as Plato, Admetas, Electra, Demeter
But all of them sensible everyday names"
3. Which ALW musical was NOT written or co-written by Don Black?

Answer: Jesus Christ Superstar

"Jesus Christ Superstar" is the second of the four collaborations with Tim Rice.

"Tell Me On A Sunday" was ALW's first musical and the only one he wrote alone.

He co-wrote "Sunset Boulevard" with Christopher Hampton and worked with
Charles Hart on the lyrics for "Aspects Of Love".
4. "Dangerous Jade" is a song from which musical?

Answer: Evita

Sang by Ché, the aristocrats and the officers towards the end of Act One after Eva and Peron have become a couple.

Both sets of people sing of how much they hate the union but are powerless to do anything about it.
5. Which musical was based on a novel by David Garnett?

Answer: Aspects Of Love

David Garnett wrote the novel in 1955. I imagine the storyline with its multiple love affairs scandalised many people.

Though, after reading of the author himself, maybe people might expect it from him.

He was married but had homosexual affairs - one of these was with a Duncan Grant.

He attended the birth of Grant's daughter, Angelica, and wrote a letter to a friend stating "I think of marrying it. When she is 20, I shall be 46 -- will it be scandalous?".

After the death of his wife, when Angelica was in her early twenties, they did marry and produced four daughters!
6. Which of these is NOT the surname of an ALW leading character?

Answer: Diaz

Christine Daaé is the lead from "Phantom Of The Opera",
Norma Desmond is the aging star of "Sunset Boulevard" and
Eva Duarte is "Evita".
7. 'Dance' was a ballet choreographed to ALW's "Variations". This was the second act of "Song and Dance". What was the first act that comprised the 'Song' half?

Answer: Tell Me On A Sunday

"Tell Me On A Sunday" was originally written and performed in 1979.

ALW composed 'Variations' for his brother Julian who plays the cello. They were combined and "Song And Dance" was performed in 1982.

A total rewrite of "Tell Me On A Sunday" premiered in 2003.
8. Who sing "Dice are Rolling"?

Answer: Eva and Peron

Eva and Peron sing this towards the end of the show.

Evita wants to be vice president and Peron is telling her that his generals will never let it happen and that she is too sick to take them on.

"Then I must now be vice-president!
And I shall have my people come to choose
Two Perons to wear their country's crowns
In thousands in my squares and avenues
Emptying their villages and towns
Where every soul in home or shack or stall
Knows me as Argentina--that is all"
9. In which musical would you find the song titled "Don't Like You"?

Answer: The Beautiful Game

This is a duet between John and Mary near the beginning of the show singing about how much they don't like each other and then they realise, at the end of the song, that they do.

Ginger and Bernadette sing a reprise towards the end of the act.
10. Which of these characters races with Rusty in "Starlight Express?

Answer: Dustin

Dustin is the Big Hopper that carries aggregate freight. He races with Poppa in the heats and Rusty in the final.

Dinah is from 'Starlight' but she races with Greaseball and Electra.

Del is the protestant boy in "The Beautiful Game."

Delia is George's first wife in "Aspects Of Love".
