Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Top university medical students take a class which improves their empathy, written and spoken communication, and self-awareness. Which of these classes help aspiring doctors achieve this goal?

Answer: Creative writing

At Harvard, Yale and many other medical schools, studies confirm that medical students became more self-aware, expressive, and empathetic after taking a creative writing or journal class. They also gained an outlet for the difficult emotions and decisions in their work.

The approach is called "Humanities in Medicine". There are increasing numbers of university undergraduate degrees available in this field.
2. This beautiful animal has helped heal human beings since ancient times. Which arts are at work when disabled or troubled people groom and ride upon horses?

Answer: Movement

Called "equine therapy", grooming or riding horses helps disabled or troubled human beings, as it has since ancient Greece. Those with physical challenges gain strength, balance and confidence as they practice rehabilitation movements, called hippotherapy. Movement therapy is based in humanities research which shows that specific kinds of movement heal not only the body, but the mind and spirit as well.
3. In socially advanced hospital wards, premature babies listen to professionals do what, so the babies won't "fret"?

Answer: Play guitar

Professional music therapists play soft guitar to premature babies. Correctly done, guitar music was shown via research to promote deeper sleep, improve breathing, mask jarring sounds in the hospital such as beeps and alarms, improve neurological development and add needed weight. Read "Music Therapy with Premature Infants" by Dr. Jayne M. Standley for some fascinating details.
4. Many hospitals utilize music therapists, but one military sergeant used the art of lyric and song in a unique way, to treat which trauma-related condition?

Answer: PTSD

Sergeant Leo Dunson served honorably (2003 to 2008), earning commendations in the wars of the Middle East, but he also developed post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). He was jailed, divorced and attempted suicide. Rejecting talk therapy and medicines, he turned to the art of music. "What's Wrong With Me?" was among his first highly successful rap songs: "Nothings ever going to be the same again everything different I'm quick to snap on someone I'm quick to start trippen..." Dunson has produced a number of popular recordings.

While his PTSD did not resolve, he was successful in his art, and work. GERD is essentially heartburn.
5. In this humanities area artists use voice and body to present tales from Aboriginal, Irish, English, African, Icelandic and many other cultures. What kind of art is this, that uplifts and entertains?

Answer: Story Telling

Story tellers are skilled at using their bodies, voices and a large cache of fables and legends to teach, entertain and heal. Some story tellers share harrowing adventures, others educate, while many entertain at festivals, classrooms, beside the campfire, and at celebrations of history and life. Even story telling within your family, such as recording the stories told by your grandparents or your siblings, is valuable.

As a discipline, effective story telling involves understanding language, persuasion, theater arts and nonverbal communication.
6. In this respected career, workers utilize the Arts of poetry, myth, philosophy, visual arts, literature, and more, to uplift and teach their listeners. But holy writings are the primary source of inspiration and healing in which type of humanities study?

Answer: Religion

Religious and spiritual leaders take their inspiration from art of all kinds, be it folk dance, rap or the writings of the philosophers and role models of the world. They need to utilize the Arts that are most important to their communities, and speak in the language most inspiring and understood. But scriptures are their primary guide in their personal lives, their art, and their work.
7. In rehabilitation programs, hard core prisoners gain new awareness and skills by acting in the theater arts. In which famous play does a young man ponder whether or not to commit a violent crime to avenge his father?

Answer: Hamlet

It's "Hamlet" that echoes many themes prisoners identify with. In preparation for performing this play, prisoners learned to speak Shakespearean English, and practiced their lines by shouting from cell to cell. The inmates brought fresh insight to such theater themes as revengeful murder, friendship, guilt and regret. Women prisoners performed "MacBeth". For most, it was their first encounter with sophisticated language and theater. "Prisoner Theater Project", "Theater Behind Bars" and "Synergy" are three of the many theater projects that successfully promote the education and rehabilitation of prisoners through theater arts.
8. Which kind of arts help hospice end-of-life patients find peace with death?

Answer: Visual

The visual arts include crafts, painting, ceramics, drawing, sculpture and video. Hospice professionals offer terminally ill patients opportunity to use visual arts to express emotion, to say goodbye, and to create a tangible record for the future of their loved ones and descendents. Patients may include other humanities areas such as photography and literature. These help patients accept that they are going to die, and express their emotions, so they can pass away in dignity and peace.
9. Using this art, impoverished children learn to operate a beloved device that opens their eyes to a broader world, and records their unique view of it. Which art clicks with struggling little kids?

Answer: Photography

Researchers found that impoverished kids of all ages and cultures go wild for cameras. Whether hungry, frightened by war or abused by adults, kids blossom when they discover they can create unique and meaningful photographs of themselves and their environments.
10. Inner city programs often utilize the humanities for at-risk teens. Which art includes hip-hop, Pointe, popping, locking and belly?

Answer: Dancing

Performing arts like dance (from the Old French "dancier"), are used for expression, communication and for spiritual, social or cultural purposes. Inner city kids build trust, self-discipline and dreams for a future using tap, ballet, hip-hop or belly dancing. "Street" dances (those developed outside formal programs), build ethnic and community pride, and bring together diverse or conflicting groups. Certified "movement" therapies based in the arts of dance and movement have been proved to help motivate and heal human beings, even these tough ones.
