Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which artist was NOT part of the 1959 Antipodean group?

Answer: Sidney Nolan

The group also included Arthur and David Boyd, John Percival and Clifton Pugh as members. The original exhibition was held at the Victorian Artist's Society in 1959 and later the same group of artists were exhibited in London's Whitechapel Gallery in 1961.
2. Which artist used "schoolgirls" as a major early theme?

Answer: Charles Blackman

Blackman also had "Alice in Wonderland", "Rainforests",etc, etc,as themes. He never had formal training and his first job was sketching for a newspaper!
3. Who is NOT a celebrated indigenous Australian artist?

Answer: Edward "Dingo" Bardoolga

Edward "Dingo" does not exist, I made him up, just as many fakers and forgers have done to our indigenous artists in recent times. A Clifford Possum painting bought for $500 from the artist 15 years ago may now be sold for $35000.00. Quite an incentive for the forger!
4. Which artist was married to Albert Tucker?

Answer: Joy Hester

Joy Hester was, in my humble opinion, a great artist in her own right. I am a big fan! You can see her work at most public galleries and at the Heide museum where there is an entire room dedicated to her work.
5. Who is best known for his paintings depicting island life?

Answer: Ray Crooke

Ray Crooke is a prolific painter and printmaker and, of course, another of my faves!
6. Which Aussie artist is well known for his "burning rope" images?

Answer: Tim Storrier

Tim is one of Australia's most saleable recent artists.
7. Here is a real easy one. Which Aussie painter is famous for his Ned Kelly paintings?

Answer: Sidney Nolan

Quite a few Nolan landscapes have had old Ned added at a later date(forged, of course) to make the painting more appealing at auction.
8. Albert Namatjira is associated with which one of these well known Aussie art H's ?

Answer: Hermannsburg

Albert was the first indigenous Australian to be granted full citizenship in 1957 because of his notoriety.
9. Which of these is an Australian national art prize for landscapes?

Answer: Wynne Prize

The Wynne Prize is Australia's oldest art award, having been awarded since 1897.
10. And finally, what year did William Dobell win the Archibald Prize for his painting of Joshua Smith?

Answer: 1943

Dobell won the prize 3 times 1943, 1948 and 1959. Dobell's painting of Smith was widely criticised as more of a caricature than a portrait!
