Ballroom Dancers Anonymous Trivia Quiz

Once ballroom dancing becomes an addiction, normal life ceases to exist. You cannot listen to the radio without saying, "hmmm...that is a tango." These are songs I adore on the dance floor.

quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You feel the turning of the world so soft and slow, Turning you round and round," as I cross the dance floor to "Smooth" by Carlos Santana (featuring Rob Thomas). What dance am I doing?

Answer: cha cha

Of Cuban decent, the cha cha is danced in American, International and Country Western ballroom styles.
2. "And I want to wake up with the rain, Falling on a tin roof, While I'm safe there in your arms," croons as I glide by to the rhythms of "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones. What dance am I doing?

Answer: waltz

While the origin of this dance is not entirely clear, the style got the most attention in Vienna, Austria. At the time, it was performed by peasants and frowned upon by the religious elite that considered the closed dance position (body contact) to be vulgar.
3. "Fly me to the moon, Let me play among the stars. Let me see what spring is like, On a-Jupiter and Mars," begins to play and I find my favorite partner. He loves "Fly Me to the Moon," by Frank Sinatra just as much as I do. We begin to dance which dance?

Answer: foxtrot

Many of the songs sung by Frank Sinatra and/or Cole Porter were foxtrots. Foxtrot is often one of the first dances taught to new dancers. I especially like to dance foxtrot on the more advanced levels since you can syncopate the pattern. Syncopation mean going "double time" or splitting the beats, thus you take two steps to the usual one.
4. "A whipped up jitterbuggin' brown eyed man, A stray cat frontin' up an eight-piece band. Cut me Sammy and you'll understand, In my veins hot music ran," pounds from the speakers as I go to the center of the floor and prepare to sweat. What dance am I doing?

Answer: east coast swing

Probably one of the most fun of all the dances, east coast swing is one of the easiest dances to learn. The "basic step" is a very simple "step, step, rock-step." East coast swing can be danced in single, double or triple time.
5. "Lay down, Sally, and rest you in my arms. Don't you think you want someone to talk to? Lay down, Sally, no need to leave so soon. I've been trying all night long just to talk to you," comes on and I step into promenade position and begin to move. Eric Clapton sure knows his dance music, but what dance am I doing?

Answer: two step

"Lay Down Sally" by Eric Clapton is an example of the standard two-step rhythm. It is more traditionally done in the country western ballroom crowd, but the average ballroom dancer would also know how to dance this dance.
6. "Hay milonga de amor, hay temblor de gotán," may not mean much to you, but "Santa Maria" by Gotan Project makes my blood boil. What dance am I doing?

Answer: tango

Tango is one of the more difficult dances to learn as it has a unique rhythm and complicated patterns. Tango's frame and posture is danced deep in the knees with the heads turned away from one another. There is a good reason for that as the dance was danced between men when it came into being during a time it was taboo to touch a woman that wasn't your spouse.
7. "Listen! All you wanna do is ride around Sally, (Ride Sally, ride)," heats up the dance floor as my partners whips me down the slot. "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett is a perfect song for which dance?

Answer: west coast swing

West coast swing, unlike east coast swing, is a "slot dance." Instead of a circular pattern, the lead pushes his partner up and down a "slot" (everything runs up and down a straight line). It is also a more complicated dance due to the rhythm and dance patterns.
8. "When we dance, angels will run and hide their wings," by Sting begins to play and for a moment I'm lost in love on the dance floor. What dance do we do?

Answer: rumba

A smoldering Latin dance, rumba is likely the easiest of the rhythm dances to learn. There is a definite "slow...quick-quick...slow" pattern that is usually danced in a box-like shape.
9. "What you doin' on your back, aah? You should be dancing, yeah, dancing, yeah," starts and I take the Bee Gees' advice and begin dancing what dance?

Answer: hustle

Hustle has identical basic steps as an east coast swing, the speed and timing at which you do them is different. Most of the songs from the disco era were hustle dances.
10. "Todo tiene su final, nada dura para siempre, tenemos que recordar que no existe eternidad, como el lindo clavel solo quiso florecer, enseñarnos su belleza y marchito perecer," fills the dance hall and I don't want "Todo Tiene Su Final" by Marc Anthony to end. What is the dance I hope doesn't end?

Answer: salsa

For the purposes of dance steps, salsa and mambo are the exact same dance. The only difference is on what count of the music you begin to move, either on the 1 count or the 2 count. The jury is out on which is exactly correct as different dancers from different parts of the world categorize the dance differently.
11. "Tonight we dance, I leave my life in your hands. We take the floor, Nothing is forbidden anymore," and I totally agree as I watch couples move to "Bailamos" by Enrique Iglesias. What dance am I watching?

Answer: samba

Why am I watching? While I love to watch samba, it is a complicated Latin dance with step patterns that are largely unlike any other Latin dance. Samba originated in Brazil and is a fascinating dance to watch. I've been dancing some six years and still "don't get it" when it comes to samba.
12. "Other dancers may be on the floor, Dear, but my eyes will see only you. Only you have that magic technique, When we sway I go weak," are the lyrics to "Sway" by the Pussy Cat Dolls and it moves me but I'm a bit confused. Half the floor is dancing rumba, but the other half is dancing what?

Answer: cha cha

"Sway" is one of those songs that fits both cha cha and rumba. You see more advanced dancers cha cha and the beginners stick with the rumba.
13. "He took me to the Spider Club on Hollywood and Vine. We drank champagne and we danced all night. We shook the paparazzi for a big surprise. The gossip tonight will be tomorrow's headline," roars to life. "Candyman" by Cristina Aquilera best suits what dance?

Answer: east coast swing

East coast swing is a favorite among the youngest of dancers. Aficionados of the dance often take it to the extreme with lifts and dips and other tricks.
14. "So now I come to you, with open arms, Nothing to hide, believe what I say. So here I am with open arms, Hoping you'll see what your love means to me, Open arms," is the chorus of "Open Arms" by Journey. I quickly find a partner and get into frame for which dance?

Answer: waltz

Another waltz, "Open Arms" is slow enough to allow you to really stretch out the steps and holds. The "slow...quick-quick...slow...quick-quick" gives you time to relax after a long night of dancing.
15. "Now he strolls through the city like a big ol' alley cat, with his pinstripe suit and a big bad voodoo hat. I don't believe I ever saw him without a kitten on his hand and he always swings hard to the big bad voodoo band!" begins the last song of the night "Mr. Pinstripe Suit" by the Big Bad Voodoo Daddies. Gathering the last of my energy, I sprint onto the floor for one final _________.

Answer: quickstep

You could also dance east coast swing and possibly jive to "Mr. Pinstripe Suit" as it is a song that suits multiple dances. In our case, of the selections given, quickstep would be the only dance to fit.
