Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. DJ Kool Herc was the first DJ to loop the breakbeats of dance records; it was this music that provided the rhythm for the first breakdancers. DJ Kool Herc and the first breakdancers performed where?

Answer: Bronx, New York City

New York City is the home of the original b-boys. B-boying (or "breakdancing", as it is often called) got its name from these breakbeats. The "b" in b-boy actually stands for "break".
2. Which one of these moves was NOT invented by breakdancers?

Answer: Flare

The flare, one of b-boying's most recognizable moves, originated from the Thomas Flare, created by gymnast Kurt Thomas.

The backspin, one of the oldest b-boy moves, has been around since the beginning of the dance. The invention of windmills (archaically known as the 'continuous backspin') is usually attributed to Bronx-based b-boy Crazy Legs, who started using the move in the mid-1970s. The airflare, one of b-boying's most daring techniques, was invented by Pablo Flores in the late 1990s.
3. Traditionally, it's said there are four elements in b-boying. Which is NOT an element of the dance?

Answer: Uprock

This was a tricky one. The four elements of b-boying are footwork, powermoves, freezes, and TOPROCK. Uprock (also known as Brooklyn Rock), is a style of dance completely separate from breakdancing, and is said to have its origins in New York gangs.
4. Which of these is NOT considered a "power move"?

Answer: Handstand

Powermoves are usually characterized by circular motions that require momentum to perform correctly.
5. The premier one-on-one b-boy competition in the world is sponsored by which energy drink?

Answer: Red Bull

First held in 2004 in Switzerland, Red Bull BC One is the most prestigious 1-on-1 b-boy championship in the world. Dozens of the world's best breakers have either competed, judged, or both.
6. Part of the German crew Battle Squad, Niels Robitzky is credited with aiding to keep b-boying alive in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1987, he broke the record for most windmills in 30 seconds. Niels became one of the most widely respected b-boys in the world under what name?

Answer: Storm

The other three are all also legendary b-boys who were involved in the revival of b-boying in the early 1990s.
7. B-boys who primarily perform powermoves and b-boys who focus on style are known as what and what, respectively?

Answer: Powerheads and Styleheads

Powerheads are often infamously compared to gymnasts and are usually looked down upon by purists of the dance.
8. Which of the following is not a b-boy move?

Answer: Thunderbolt

The airbaby is a variation of the basic "baby freeze" where the arms are solely used to support the rest of the body.

The jackhammer is a powermove where the entire body is held up using only an arm pushed into the abdomen, then hops on the supporting hand.

The 2000 (usually measured in rounds/revolutions) is in essence a spinning handstand with one hand over the other. The 1990 is the one-handed version of this move.

Thunderbolt is actually a yoga pose.
9. In b-boying, one of the most important aspects is originality, and copying someone else's moves without making it different in any way is considered a major infraction. Most people would calling it plagiarism; what do b-boys call it?

Answer: Biting

The easiest way for someone to get a bad reputation is by biting. While moves like the headspin and the six-step are considered "public domain", almost every b-boy has certain combinations and variations on moves they call their own.
10. In b-boying, which of these is most important for a notable performance?

Answer: Creativity

While the other are all important (to varying degrees), creativity and originality are what divides b-boys from gymnasts, martial artists, and most importantly, other b-boys.
