Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which answer completes the line given from the opening number: "The pajama game is the game I'm in and I'm proud to be in the pajama game ..."?

Answer: I love it

"I can hardly wait to wake
And get to work at eight
Nothing's quite the same as the Pajama Game."

The opening number, called "The Pajama Game", is sung by Vernon Hines, the timekeeper for the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory. The music for "The Pajama Game" was composed by Richard Alder and Jerry Ross, the same duo that composed the music for "Damn Yankees."
2. What is the title for the song that contains this lyric: "And the second hand doesn't understand/ That your back may break and your fingers ache/ And your constitution isn't made of rock"?

Answer: Racing With the Clock

"It's a losing race when you're racing with the
Racing racing racing with the clock."

This number is performed by the sewing room girls of the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory. "The Pajama Game" is based on the book entitled "7 1/2 Cents" by Richard Bissell and is about the workers of the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory fighting for a seven-and-a-half cent raise in their hourly pay.
3. Which pair sings the number "I'll Never Be Jealous Again"?

Answer: Hines and Mabel

"I would trust her, I would trust her, by George, I swear I would trust her
No I'll never be jealous again."

Mabel, Sid Sorokin's secretary, gives Hines some much needed advice about not being jealous over Gladys, his current love interest. Reta Shaw played Mabel in the original Broadway cast and Eddie Foy, Jr. played Hines.
4. Complete the line given from the song "I'm Not at All in Love": "When I fall in love there'll be no doubt about it, 'cause you will know from the way that I ..."

Answer: shout it

"I'm Not at All in Love" is a song featuring Catherine "Babe" Williams, Chairman of the Grievance Committee, and the other sewing room girls as she tries to convince them that she is not romantically interested in the factory's new superintendent, Sid Sorokin. Babe was originally played by Janis Paige on Broadway, while Doris Day played Babe in the 1957 movie.
5. Which male character sings the song "Hey There?"

Answer: Sid

Sid sings "Hey There" in the first act, while Babe sings the reprise in the second act. John Raitt played Sid in the movie alongside Doris Day, as well as originating the role on Broadway.
6. What is the title for the song that contains this lyric? "My wife, she ain't understandin', she ain't like her is! This here ain't no line I'm handin', or I should drop dead right where I'm standin'..."

Answer: Her Is

Prez sings the song "Her Is" first with Gladys, then sings a "Her Is" reprise with Mae. Prez is the head of the union and, despite being married, is quite the ladies' man. The role was originated on Broadway by Stanely Prager.
7. Which pair sings the songs "Small Talk" and "There Once Was A Man?"

Answer: Babe and Sid

Babe is hesitant to start a relationship with Sid because she fears that differences at work would impact their happiness together. Although the two recognize that they love each other, work conflicts inevitably separate them for a while.
8. Which song contains the following lyric: "Everyone's entitled to be wild, be a child, be a goof, raise the roof?"

Answer: Once a Year Day

This song is sung by Babe, Sid, and the Ensemble at the annual company picnic. Kelli O'Hara played Babe in the 2006 revival of "The Pajama Game" alongside Harry Connick, Jr. as Sid.
9. Which female character sings "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway"?

Answer: Gladys

Gladys is the secretary of Mr. Hasler, the head of the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory. Carol Haney played Gladys in the original Broadway production; however, Shirley MacLaine first started her career off as Haney's understudy. She played Gladys for seven months while Haney was recovering from a broken ankle.
10. What song do Prez and Babe sing at the Union Rally?

Answer: 7 1/2 Cents

"I figured it out
I figured it out
With a pencil and a pad I figured it out!
Seven and a half cents doesn't buy a hell of a lot,
Seven and a half cents doesn't mean a thing!
But give it to me every hour,
Forty hours every week,
And that's enough for me to be living like a king!"

The workers are finally granted their seven-and-a-half cent raise after having learned that Mr. Hasler has already added the raise to the production costs and secretly pocketed the funds.
