5. What level of competition would one advance to after Novice?

6. What is a local dance competition called? Remember, dance names and competition categories are based on that of the eastern region of the US.

Answer: feis

Girls and boys of all ages can dance in all levels from beginner to Open Championship. Awards are usually given to those who win.
7. Most girls wear wigs during competition. Why do they do this?

Answer: They don't have the naturally curly hair that is a tradition to wear.

It has always been a tradition to wear curly hair while Irish dancing - the extra height produces the illusion of the actual jumps performed being higher. Most girls buy wigs because it is much easier than curling their hair with rollers.
8. How many First places must you win in Preliminary Championships (Mid-Atlantic Region rules) in order to move into Open Championship?

Answer: 3

Winning 1st place is a very high achievement. Sometimes there are over 50 girls in Preliminary Championship competitions! In most other regions, you only need two wins to move on to Open competition.
9. Which of these dances is usually a beginner dance and is not used in the championship level?

Answer: light jig

The light jig helps beginners learn timing, crossing, to be on their toes, etc. The dances used in championships are the reel, slip jig, treble jig, and hornpipe.

Answer: black
