Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following lyrics are NOT from the song "Any Dream Will Do"?

Answer: "A crash of drums, a flash of light my coloured coat flew in the night"

The correct line here would be:

"A crash of drums, a flash of light my golden coat flew out of sight"

'Joseph' began as a 15 min pop cantata commissioned by Alan Doggart, head of the music department at Colet Court Scool in London. Its first performance was at the school on 1st March 1968.
The present version of the show which includes "Any Dream Will Do" at the start (and the renaming of the closing version) only dates from the 1991 revival.
2. Which line does the narrator NOT sing in "Jacob And Sons"?

Answer: "Jacob, Jacob and sons, a fantastic group in everyone's book"

The correct line here would be:

"Jacob, Jacob and sons, a remarkable family in anyone's book"

This song introduces all twelve of Jacob's sons. They are the ancestors of the tribes of Israel, and the ones for whom the tribes are named. All of the tribes occupy a separate territory in Israel except for the Levites who were set apart to serve in the Holy Temple.
3. Which of the following does NOT appear in "Joseph's Coat"?

Answer: "Jacob wanted to show the world he loved his son, to show them all that Joseph had already won"

The correct line here would be:

"Jacob wanted to show the world he loved his son, to make it clear that Joseph was the special one"

Jacob had two wives, Leah and Rachel, and two concubines, Bilhah and Zilpah.
He had children with all four women but Rachel was his favourite and mother to his two youngest children, Joseph and Benjamin. Joseph reminded Jacob of Rachel, who had died after giving birth to Benjamin, and was consequently his much favoured son.
4. Which of these do the brothers NOT sing in "One More Angel In Heaven"?

Answer: "His body may be past its prime but his soul's in the afterlife"

The correct line here would be:

"His body may be past its peak but his soul's in paradise"

ALW used a variety of styles of music in the musical. "One More Angel in Heaven" is in the genre of a country and western song. In most productions it is a solo sang by either Reuben or Levi and usually segues into a real country hoedown after Jacob has left the stage.
5. Three of these lines appear in "Potiphar". Which one does NOT?

Answer: "Poor, poor Joseph, what'cha gonna do? Things look bad for you, hey, what'cha gonna do?"

The correct line here would be:

"Poor poor Joseph, locked up in a cell, things ain't going well, hey, locked up in a cell"

The above 'wrong' lyrics are correct but they are sung by the narrator in "Poor, Poor Joseph" after the brothers have sold him to the Ishmaelites.
6. Joseph's famous song. Which line DOESN'T he sing in "Close Every Door"?

Answer: "Just give me a number instead of my name, just leave me forever alone with my pain"

The correct line here would be:

"Just give me a number instead of my name, forget all about me and let me decay"

In 2007 the BBC produced a television reality show entitled "Any Dream Will Do" to search for an unknown to play Joseph in a new West End revival of the show. Twelve contestants vied for the position with one being voted off each week. At the end of the episode the eliminated Joseph would perform "Close Every Door" together with the remaining Josephs as his grand exit song before symbolically handing back his dreamcoat.
Lee Mead was the eventual winner. His first public performance was at the 'Concert For Diana' at London's Wembley Stadium, where he sang "Any Dream Will Do" with former "Joseph" stars Donny Osmond and Jason Donovan.
7. Which lyrics DON'T appear in "Go, Go, Go Joseph"?

Answer: "Go, go, go Joseph you know what they say. Come on now Joseph we just need to pray"

There is no correct line here. It was totally made up

"Go, Go, Go Joseph" is the big finale at the end of act one. It is sung in disco style with a large amount of the cast onstage.
8. Taken from the song "Pharaoh Story". Which one ISN'T in it?

Answer: "The Pharaoh was a masterful man with all of Egypt eating out of his hand"

The correct line here would be:

"Pharaoh, he was a powerful man with the ancient world in the palm of his hand"

Andrew Lloyd Webber, who was a devoted fan of Elvis Presley, based the character of Pharaoh on him. Most people who have seen the show would know this but few people were aware that Elvis recorded one of ALW compositions in return. A song titled "It's Easy For You" was recorded during his last session on 29th October 1976 and features as the last track on "The Moody Blue" album.
9. Which of these lyrics AREN'T in "Stone The Crows"?

Answer: "Seven years of famine followed Egypt didn't care at all, because of Josephs rationing they all had a ball"

The correct line here would be:

"Seven years of famine followed Egypt didn't mind a bit, the first recorded rationing in history was a hit"

After interpreting Pharaoh's dreams and being released from prison, Pharaoh puts Joseph in charge of carrying out the preparations needed to prepare for the coming famine. Joseph becomes the most powerful man in Egypt, second only to the Pharaoh.
10. Which one of these lines does NOT appear in "Benjamin Calypso"?

Answer: "Sure as the pure blue rivers ran Benjamin is an innocent man"

The correct line here would be:

"Sure as the tide wash the golden sand Benjamin is an innocent man"

Sung by Judah in true calypso style.
