Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are you doing if you're pandiculating?

Answer: stretching

Specifically, the stretching motion associated with yawning. I guess if you stretch without yawning, it's just plain "stretching".
2. What would you find in a nidus?

Answer: bacteria

Actually, the word "nidus" has several meanings: 1) A nest, such as for the eggs of insects, spiders, or small animals 2) cavity in which spores develop 3) central point or focus of bacterial growth in a living organism 4) point or place at which something originates, accumulates, or develops, as the center around which salts of calcium, uric acid, or bile acid form calculi. (from the American Heritage Dictionary)
3. Believe it or not, there's a term for a neighbor whose house is burning down. What is it?

Answer: ucalegon

Hopefully, this is a word that is not used often. It comes from Greek myth, in which Ucalegon was a neighbour of Aeneas whose residence had burned down.
4. If you describe someone as callipygian, you're complimenting them on their what?

Answer: buttocks

The definition is "having shapely buttocks". This would be a great pickup line: "Hey baby, you're looking mighty callipygian tonight." From the Greek "kallipugos"- kalli-, beautiful (from kallos, beauty); pug- buttocks. Not to be confused with "steatopygous", meaning "having bulging buttocks".
5. On what garment would you find a gore?

Answer: a sock

A gore is any piece of material used to create a three-dimensional shape from flat pieces. In socks, gores are used to add the extra room needed to accommodate the heel. Skirts and parachutes can also be made by connecting flat pieces of material shaped so as to produce a rounded product. The other three options in this question are all flat.
6. What is a zyzzyva?

Answer: an insect

A zyzzyva is any one of various tropical American weevils of the genus Zyzzyva, often destructive to plants.
7. If you experience formication, what are you most likely doing?

Answer: using drugs

Reason not to use drugs no. 378: Sometimes drug users, especially those under the influence of amphetamines, may experience hallucinations in which bugs or snakes are crawling on their skin. This is called "formication"; from the Latin "formica", meaning "ant".
8. The adjective "molendinarious" pertains to what?

Answer: the arms of a windmill

Try to use this one in a sentence. Go on.
9. Mary says, "That darn Dave is scobberlotching again!" What is Dave doing?

Answer: loafing

To scobberlotch means to laze around and do nothing.
10. If something is described as "smaragdine", what color is it?

Answer: emerald green

I can find only one instance in which this word was used: According to Albertus Magnus, Alexander the Great found an emerald tablet- the Smaragdine Table - in the cave of Hermes in Hebron.
11. If someone calls you a brockie, it means you have a what?

Answer: dirty face

The term "brock" originally referred to a badger, which has a black-and-white face. It came to be used to describe anyone who resembled such, such as muddy children or auto mechanics.
12. If someone engages in kompology, what are they doing?

Answer: bragging

Kompology is defined as the act of braggadocio.
13. Which of these places might be targeted by redhibition?

Answer: Wal-Mart

Redhibition is a civil action meant to punish a seller for the sale of defective merchandise, similar to lemon laws. Wouldn't it be funny if they put up a sign in the store that says "Redhibition here"? In the U.S., redhibition is a part of Louisiana law and is not found in any other state.
14. If you call someone a fefnicute, of what are you accusing them?

Answer: being a hypocrite

A fefnicute is a hypocrite or sneak. "Don't be such a fefnicute!"
