Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What musical are these lyrics from? "Who is this man, what sort of devil is he?"

Answer: Les Miserables

My favorite musical. The multi-story tale with themes of love, the difference between right and wrong, forgiveness, and redemption, is one of Broadway's and the West End's most successful musicals of all-time.

That lyric in the question is from "Javert's Soliloquy".
2. In 1967, Robert Preston won his second Tony Award for which musical?

Answer: I Do! I Do!

My second favorite musical. It is about the marriage of two newly weds. It is a two person show, that originally starred Robert Preston and Mary Martin.

"My Cup Runneth Over" is the famous song from this musical.
3. Betty Buckley made her Broadway debut in this Broadway musical. What is its name?

Answer: 1776

My third favorite musical. This dramatization of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, originally starring William Daniels as John Adams, won the Tony for Best Musical.

Betty Buckley played the role of Martha Jefferson.
4. "I'm amazed that men like you can be so shallow, thick and slow There is not a man among you who know or cares if I come or go." What musical are these lyrics from?

Answer: Jesus Christ Superstar

This Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is my fourth favorite. The dramatization of Judas's betrayal of Jesus, and Jesus's downfall, is completely sung through.

The lyrics featured in the question come from the song "Strange Thing Mystifying".
5. The 1962 revival of this musical features the song "Let's Misbehave". What musical is it?

Answer: Anything Goes

Ethel Merman played the original Reno in my fifth favorite musical. Patti Lupone and Sutton Foster have followed suit in being big successes in this beloved musical that also features songs such as "I Get a Kick Out of You", "You're the Top", and "Anything Goes".

Only the 1962 revival features the song "Let's Misbehave", which was originally intended for another Cole Porter musical, "Paris".
6. Some lyrics in this musical ask, "Can you sing at the same time, in more than one key?". What musical is it?

Answer: Cats

Those lyrics come from "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats". It is about a group of cats who will decide which of them will go to the Heavyside Layer. "Cats" used to be the longest running musical on Broadway until "The Phantom of the Opera" surpassed it.
Between its intricate and impressive score, legendary songs like "Memory", and a wonderful story, "Cats" has cemented itself as my sixth favorite musical.
7. Coming in as my seventh favorite musical is one whose lyrics tell us that "Norwegians learn Norwegian; the Greeks have taught their Greek". Which musical is it?

Answer: My Fair Lady

Julie Andrews was the original Eliza in this musical about a flower girl who gets speech lessons by a professor so he can pass her off as a lady.

The infectious, intelligent, lyrically clever score is the main reason this classic is my seventh favorite.
8. This jukebox musical is an adaptation of an Oscar winning movie. What musical is it?

Answer: Bullets Over Broadway

Woody Allen adapted his 1994 Oscar winner into a jukebox musical. The musical, about a Broadway playwright who has a gangster produce his first play, is my eight favorite of all-time. It won the Tony for Best Choreography.
9. Which of these musicals tells Broadway to "keep it gay" when it comes to its musicals and plays?

Answer: The Producers

The song the lyrics are from is called "Keep it Gay".

Mel Brooks adapted his 1968 Oscar winner (Best original screenplay), into a Broadway musical. "The Producers" was so successful on Broadway that it won the most Tony Awards of all-time. When the producers of "The Producers" wanted to close the show, they couldn't because of ticket sales and demand.

My ninth favorite musical.
10. This show has a song called "Snuff That Girl", which parodies West Side Story. What musical is it?

Answer: Urinetown

"Urinetown" is about a revolution by the suppressed people of the town plagued by a 20 year water drought. It's so bad they have to pay money to pee. The score is funny and very intelligent. It parodies Broadway musicals, populism, capitalism, politics, and corporations.

It comes in as my tenth favorite musical.
