Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She went with ___ and John to the fair.

Answer: her

This sentence needs an objective pronoun. "Herself" is a reflexive pronoun. Therefore, the correct choice is "her."
2. It is just you and ___. Which of these words is technically correct to complete the preceding sentence, although it would almost never be used in spoken English today?

Answer: I

The answer is "I" because the subject must appear in nominative form.
3. My mother invited my wife and ___ to dinner.

Answer: me

Once again, the blank needs an objective pronoun, so "me" is correct.
4. It is ___.

Answer: I

The verb "to be" takes the nominative, not the objective case. The answer is "I."
5. This is between him and ___.

Answer: me

Once again, the blank requires an objective pronoun because it follows a preposition, so "me" is the only correct answer. I is nominative, while myself and yourself are both reflexive. (Some people might well say him and I, in an ill-judged effort show awareness that one should not properly say "It is me", even though we all do so in conversation.) The objective pronoun does have its place!
6. ___ and Joe like hot dogs.

Answer: We

In this case, the needed pronoun must be in subjective form. Therefore, "We" is the only correct answer.
7. Mom drove there with ___ children.

Answer: us

This answer to this question has to be in objective form. "Us" is the only one that works.
8. She went to Utah with Joan and ___.

Answer: me

I thought I would use an operational test to describe this one. To find the answer to this question, remove "Joan and ___" from the sentence, and replace it with the appropriate plural pronoun. It would have to either be "us" or "we." Which sounds correct? If the sentence "She went to Utah with us (objective plural)" sounds correct, then the correct singular pronoun MUST be also be objective.

The correct answer, therefore, is "me."
9. They asked Joan and ___ to watch their dog.

Answer: him

Once again, the blank requires an objective pronoun, so "him" is the only correct answer.
10. ___ and Jim went skiing last week.

Answer: They

The blank requires a subjective pronoun. "They" is the only subjective pronoun listed.
