Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of the composer and lyricist, respectively?

Answer: Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens

In 1994 the two collaborated on an audition tape made up of 4 songs for the would-be musical. Opening night on Broadway was January 18, 1998.
2. "In ____ Father built a house at the crest of the Broadview Avenue hill in New Rochelle..."

Answer: 1902

This is the first line of the show; it's in the Prologue, "Ragtime". The show spans approximately 10 years. The epilogue, which is a reprise of "Ragtime" and "Wheels of a Dream" includes talk of the first World War, and of how each main character 'ended up'.
3. True or False: The little boy is the only person in the white family to have a name.

Answer: True

His name is Edgar. Edgar is a very interesting character. He seems to know more than he should. He repeats the line "Warn the Duke!" a number of times(referring to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, which led to WWI); also, in "Nothing Like the City", Edgar says "We know those people" (Tateh and the Little Girl), to which Mother replies "That's ridiculous, they're poor foreigners" but Edgar says "Then we're going to know them" and they do! What a guy!
4. Which University did Father attend?

Answer: Harvard

This information is found in the song "What a Game"
'At Harvard, We were gentlemen. Men were gentlemen.' This song is really entertaining and fun, though I'm pretty sure the show would have been just as extraordinary without it. But that's just my opinion.
5. In the original Broadway cast, who played Coalhouse Walker Jr.?

Answer: Brian Stokes Mitchell

Apparently you can only play Coalhouse if you have a stage name consisting of three names, or at least an initial!
White is from a Broadway cast, Darrington from the Canadian Tour in 2002 and Rollins is from the cast pre-Broadway.
6. On which day of the week did Coalhouse visit Sarah at the house in New Rochelle?

Answer: Sunday

"Each Sunday he'd come driving. Curtains would part, Neighbors would peek." At first, Mother is hesitant to let Coalhouse Walker Jr. into her home, but as weeks pass, she invites him in and he plays the piano for her and her family, and Sarah.
7. In the song/scene "Look What You've Done", what does younger brother protest Coalhouse doing?

Answer: Turning himself in

"You can't change your demands. You are betraying us. You said we would all go free or we would all die!" Coalhouse does end up turning himself in, and getting shot and killed. Younger Brother later joins the revolutionary, Emiliano Zapata, in Mexico.
8. Fill in the missing lyrics from "Our Children": 'One so fair, And the other lithe and dark. ____ ____ and ____ ____, our children.'

Answer: solemn joy sudden spark

This song shows the coming together, not only of the little girl and little boy, but of Mother and Tateh. It is sung in Act II. Mother ends up marrying Tateh a year after Father dies while on the Lusitania.
9. True or False: Coalhouse knew that Sarah was pregnant with his child.

Answer: False

In the song "Your Daddy's Son", we learn,"Daddy never knew that you were on your way. He had other ladies and other tunes to play."
Mother and Tateh end up raising Little Coalhouse after both his parents are killed.
10. What does father do in the scene/song 'Journey On' that shows he is racist?

Answer: He does not shake hands with Henson

Father also utters the line "There were gazeboes and there were no Negroes" This basically sets the tone for the whole show, but you really see how Father feels about black people in the scene with Henson by refusing to shake his hand. Nonetheless, there's a beautiful picture at the end of the show with such a multi-cultural family(Mother, Edgar, Tateh, the Little Girl, and Little Coalhouse).
