Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Broadway play, "Seasons of Love" takes place at the beginning of the second act. Where does it take place in the movie?

Answer: At the beginning of the movie

The song "Seasons of Love" was thought to be a better song to open a movie with, so they decided to put it at the beginning instead of "Tune Up #1", and leave "Seasons of Love B" to open the second act.
2. The musical score (not the lyrics) of "Out Tonight" was left unchanged in the movie.

Answer: False

While the music was the same, a drum solo was added in the beginning. They also changed where it was supposed to take place. In the Broadway play, Mimi is in her apartment while singing the song, and then moves down to Roger's apartment. In the movie, she is dancing at the Catscratch Club and then walks over to Roger's apartment.
3. "Christmas Bells" does not appear in the movie as a song.

Answer: true

Yes, it is true. I was very upset about this because it is such a good song, but they never found a way to make it fit in the movie.
4. In the Broadway play, "Without You" is sung in B minor. What key is it, in the movie?

Answer: A minor

In the Broadway play, "Without You" is sung in B minor, and in the movie it is in A minor. This is probably because the singer, Mimi, is not played by the same person in both the play and the movie.
5. Which of these songs was left in the movie?

Answer: Sante Fe

Even though "Sante Fe" was the only one in the movie of those listed above, it was not the only that was filmed. They had Mark (Anthony Rapp) sing "Halloween", but then felt that you didn't need that moment where you can be completely in his shoes. Those moments are easier to portray on film than on stage, so it was cut from the film.
6. Which two actors/actresses were not cast in the movie, but were a part of the Broadway cast?

Answer: Fredi Walker and Daphne Rubin-Vega

Fredi Walker and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Joanne and Mimi, respectively) both decided not to do the film. Fredi Walker thought she had aged her role past a believable point, and Daphne Rubin-Vega was pregnant. So, for the movie the role of Joanne was played by Tracie Thoms and the role of Mimi by Rosario Dawson.
7. One of the Life Support Meeting songs was taken completely out of the Movie.

Answer: False

Nope, they were all in there, thankfully, although they were portrayed quite differently. In the play the opening where Mark comes and makes a commotion makes it seem playful and clumsy. In the film it is quiet and somber. Much different emotion. In addition the introduction to the first Life Support Meeting Song was not sung but spoken, but Im going to count that as in the movie.
8. The ending of the movie changed, but only slightly. Instead of ending back on the stage like they began the film (the way the play ends, with Angel coming onstage) they let a shot of Angel in Mark's film fade out to blackness. According to Christopher Colombus's commentary on the DVD, what was the reason for this change?

Answer: They didn't want it to seem fake - like Angel was actually alive and he was okay

Christopher Columbus (the director of the film) thought that the film would be much more touching if the audience didn't see Angel essentially come back to life. The ending would seem more real and powerful.
9. Some of "Goodbye Love" was taken out of the film.

Answer: True

The opening part of the song was left in but the major part of the song was taken out. The main reason: They felt they couldn't have Mark and Roger actually singing to each other! (Never happened before in the film)
10. Which of these is true about the song "Today 4 U"?

Answer: Part of the song was taken out of the film

The introduction of the song was taken out. However, pieces of it were said in conversation.
