Similes Referring to Animals Trivia Quiz

English traditionally links certain qualities with specific animals. However busy a cow may be grazing in the meadows, it's the bee which we have chosen to call 'busy'. See if you have still in mind all those traditional similes.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How cross can we be ?

Answer: As a bear

Especially bears with sore heads can be VERY cross. Well better don't show a red rag to a bull and remember once bitten always angry is the elephant's motto. Porcupines... well it's not easy to have any dealings with them. Their quills always prick and hurt, whether they are sore or not.
2. How sly do we try to be ?

Answer: As a fox

Cats are cunning too but they are sly enough not to demonstrate it too openly. What else can an eel be but wet and slippery ... and very fast. Hares ... well they are good runners but slow starters, if we can believe the Fable.
3. If a person doesn't diet in time he or she might get as fat as a ___ .

Answer: Pig

Pigs are said to be such sensitive animals. And real gourmets. Yet their noises don't show good table-manners and they have acquired a long-standing reputation as not so very clean, non-slimming gluttons.
4. High up in the sky in a balloon, you might feel as free as a ____.

Answer: bird

Aren't we all a little jealous of birds? The flying-range of ladybirds may be more spectacular than we think, but their style of flying does not seem to have anything to impress us. Crickets and wallabies are ground troops.
5. A person whose eyesight is extremely weak, might be called as blind as a ____.

Answer: Bat

The eyesight of moles is highly dubious but it's bats that caught our attention as 'blindfliers'. With all that salty seawater there can be little use for a pair of eyes in the anatomy of a mussel, but good eyesight does not seem to be a major requirement for a mollusc, either.
6. How strong can you be?

Answer: As an ox

Oxen are also supposed to be dumb. Strangely enough for a nation of horselovers, in the English language horses are, in the first place, called hungry. Other languages consider horses to be strong in the first place.
7. A certain type of stupidity makes you as silly as _____ ?

Answer: A goose

Never saw a gaggle of giggling geese though.
8. When you are poor, you may be as poor as ____?

Answer: A churchmouse

Just imagine the life of a tiny little mouse in an empty, damp, cold church. Brrr. A sparrow may be a democrat among birds, but it's far too busy to think of poverty at all. Wrens are small-size birds , but they behave as if they were royalty. Crows are so ugly that they always lose in popularity polls, but they are good enough thieves not to have to be beggars.
9. Pride makes you as proud as _______?

Answer: A peacock

Owls are too wise for vanity. Parrots and buffaloes may be proud creatures too, but neither is so proud as the peacock when it spreads its tail.
10. When you feel really snug you may feel as snug as ____?

Answer: A bug in a rug

You can feel as sick as a dog, be as gentle as a lamb and things you pick up can be as slippery as an eel , but what could be snugger than a bug in a rug?
