Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Maybe", what does Annie speculate her father might be doing?

Answer: Pouring her mother coffee

"Betcha they're good, why shouldn't they be? Their one mistake was giving up me." This is from the song "Maybe" - the first song in the play. Annie sings it to Molly when she has a nightmare.
2. According to Burt Healy and the Boylan Sisters, what are you never fully dressed without?

Answer: A smile

"Who cares what they're wearing on Main Street or Savile Row? It's what you wear from ear to ear and not from head to toe that matters!" "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" takes place in the scene where Annie is at the radio station putting out an ad to find her parents.

The name of the radio program is "Burt Healy's Hour of Smiles" and it is sponsored by Oxydent - the toothpaste of stars!
3. "'Steada ____, we get ____, 'steada ____, we get ____, it's the hard-knock life!" Fill in the missing words from these lyrics.

Answer: treated, tricked, kisses, kicked

"Cotton blankets 'steada wool, empty bellies 'steada full! It's the hard-knock life!" "It's the Hard-Knock Life" is the song the orphans sing after Miss Hannigan catches Annie trying to run away. She gets angry and makes the orphans clean the orphanage at 4 o'clock in the morning!
4. According to the song "NYC", the named city is "waiting-room only."

Answer: False

"NYC, what is it about you?" That quote is close, but not quite right. The lyric is actually, "NYC, you're standing-room only."
5. What street do Miss Hannigan, Rooster, and Lily want to live on?

Answer: Easy Street

"I remember the way our sainted mother would sit and croon us her lullaby. She'd say, 'Kids, there's a place that's like no other, ya gotta get there before you die!'" "Easy Street" is the song Rooster, Lily, and Miss Hannigan sing when they first start hatching the plan to get the $50,000 reward for Annie's parents! This is my personal favorite song from the show.
6. Miss Hannigan envies women who aren't dripping with little girls; what, however, are those women dripping with? "Some women are dripping with ___, some women are dripping with pearls."

Answer: Diamonds

"Someday I'll land in the nut house with all the nuts and the squirrels!" "Little Girls" is Miss Hannigan's only solo song. She's angry after one of the orphans, Kate, waves a dead mouse in her face. This song expresses her annoyance with little girls!
7. When Annie is "stuck with a day that's gray and lonely," what does she say she does?

Answer: Sticks up her chin and grins

"Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow, you're always a day away!" The line "always a day away" gets changed when Annie is at the White House. President Roosevelt wants to portray hope to everyone, so he alters "Tomorrow" to say, "you're only a day away."
8. What are the people in the Hooverville forced to do that's explicitly stated in the song?

Answer: Scrounge for meals

"We'd like to thank you, Herbert Hoover, for really showing us the way; you dirty rat, you bureaucrat, you made us what we are today!" The song "We'd Like To Thank You, Herbert Hoover" is very sarcastic. It shows the "real" side of the Great Depression - a shantytown (commonly called Hoovervilles) with people who used to be rich with good lives, reduced to "scrounging for a meal" and "stealing coal for fires" to survive.
9. Where is the swimming pool in Mr. Warbucks' house (from the song "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here")?

Answer: The left

"When you wake, ring for Drake, Drake will bring your tray! When you're through, Mrs. Pugh comes to take it away." This is the song the servants and Grace sing upon Annie's arrival. Annie decides that she thinks she's gonna like it there! :)
10. In the song "You Won't Be An Orphan For Long", what do they want to accomplish?

Answer: Finding Annie's parents

"'Cross the street or 'cross the sea, Annie, sweet, we guarantee that you won't be an orphan, no, you won't be an orphan for long!" In this number, the servants and Warbucks are working to locate Annie's parents. It's very hopeful, but also a bit sad since they all want Annie to stay.
11. According to the very last song, what are the orphans - and everyone across America - getting for Christmas?

Answer: A new deal

"I've heard a terrible rumor: no good will, no cheer! But we'll get a new deal for Christmas this year!" In "A New Deal for Christmas", FDR assures Warbucks and the orphans that he's going to start changing things to make the times better for everyone. This optimistic song closes the show.
12. Annie and Warbucks sing that they "don't need anything but..." what?

Answer: you

"Together at last, together forever; we're tying a knot they never can sever!" "I Don't Need Anything But You" is the song where the audience first gets a real glimpse of how fond Warbucks and Annie have grown to be of each other. It's a very sweet song and really shows how Annie has found a father in Warbucks, and Warbucks has found a daughter he never even knew he wanted!
13. What do the servants say Annie has done for them in the song "Annie"?

Answer: Kicked out the blues

"Annie, Annie, Annie, look what you've done for us!" Annie certainly brightens up Warbucks' house. She teaches him that his servants are more than just that - they are his friends. She also shows them all how to be happy again. This song shows the servants' appreciation for everything Annie has done.
14. How much money does the Star-To-Be have in "NYC"?

Answer: Three bucks

"NYC, I give you fair warning: up there in lights I'll be!" Though the Star-To-Be doesn't have an official name, she has one of the hardest solos to sing - three key changes with no lead-in! The Star-To-Be sings that she just got to New York that morning with three bucks, two bags, one her.
15. According to Molly in "A New Deal For Christmas," what don't they have?

Answer: Peppermint sticks

"All 'cross the land, folks are bawling and filled with despair, 'cause cupboards are bare." In this song, the beginning starts a little sad, with everyone talking about how hard the Depression is. However, FDR promises them all a "New Deal" for Christmas. This optimistic song closes the show, just as this question closes our quiz.
