Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start from the beginning. In which of the following Greek cities was Herakles born?

Answer: Thebes

His mother was Alcmene, but his father was Zeus, who had taken the form of Amphitryon, Alcmene's husband. Because of Zeus' adultery, Hera despised Herakles from his very birth.
2. Which of the following personalities did NOT belong to Herakles' immediate family?

Answer: Polydeuces

Polydeuces was the brother of Castor. They were both sons of Zeus, known as the Dioskouroi. After their deaths, they were made stars, the constellation of Gemini.
Iolaus was Herakles' nephew, the son of his brother, Iphicles. Amphtiryon was his stepfather, the husband of his mother, and Eurystheus was his cousin.
3. What name was Herakles given by his parents?

Answer: Alcides

He took the name Herakles later. "Herakles" means "the glory of Hera", and the name was taken as a futile attempt to appease the goddess.
4. Early in his life, Herakles married Megara, the daughter of an important King of Thebes. Who was he?

Answer: Creon

Creon was a well-known figure of myth and appeared prominently in two tragedies by Sophocles: "Oedipus the King" and "Antigone". In the latter, he was the primary antagonist, as he defied the unwritten laws of the gods and placed his own decrees above them.
5. Some years after his marriage, a tragedy befell Herakles. Hera caused him to go mad and, in his madness, he killed his own wife and children. Who was finally able to cure him?

Answer: Antikyreus

Antikyreus was the founder of Antikythera. He used hellebore in order to cure Herakles of his madness. After being cured, Herakles understood what he had done and fled to Delphi to seek the counsel of the Oracle.
6. In order to get purified, Herakles had to complete ten tasks set by his arch-enemy Eurystheus. When he did so, however, Eurystheus declared two of them invalid and demanded two more. What were the two tasks Eurystheus did not accept?

Answer: The Hydra and the Augean Stables

Eurystheus rejected the slaying of the Hydra because Herakles had the help of his nephew, Iolaus, and the Augean Stables because he was paid for the job. The two tasks he demanded to replace them were the stealing of the Apples of the Hesperides and the Capture of Cerberus.
7. After he was freed from Eurystheus' service, Herakles fell in love with the princess of Oechalia. What was her name?

Answer: Iole

Iole was the daughter of Eurytus. Eurytus had promised her hand to the man who would beat him in an archery contest. Herakles did manage it, but Eurytus knew that Herakles had killed his first wife and his children, so he forfeited the prize.
8. After being forbidden to marry the princess of Oechalia, Herakles asked for the hand of Dianeira, and eventually married her. Dianeira was sister to which of the following figures of mythology?

Answer: Meleager

Meleager was the son of Althea and Oeneus. He is most well known for hosting the Caledonian boar hunt and for killing the boar with the help of Atalanta.
9. Some time after his marriage to Dianeira, Herakles and his wife found themselves at the river Evenus. A centaur offered to ferry Dianeira to the other bank of the river, but when he did, he tried to rape her and was killed by Herakles for that. What was his name?

Answer: Nessus

Before dying, Nessus told Dianeira to keep some of his blood because it contained a love potion that could make Herakles desire her passionately, if his cloak had been soaked in it. Nessus lied, and his lies resulted in the death of Herakles.
10. After his death, Herakles ascended in Mount Olympus, where he reconciled his differences with Hera and married her daughter. What was her name?

Answer: Hebe

Hebe was the goddess of youth. She served the Olympian gods ambrosia and nectar. The Romans called her Juventus.
