Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The role of Robert was originated by Larry Kert.

Answer: False

Dean Jones originated the role, which was quickly taken over by Larry Kert. Originally, Anthony Perkins of "Psycho" fame was to star. Curiously enough, Jones is a baritone and Kert was a tenor, yet they played the same character!
2. How many of Robert's girlfriends are featured in the show?

Answer: Three

Marta, April and Kathy sing "You Could Drive a Person Crazy", remembering their experiences with the emotionally distant Robert. Robert and April have a duet in Act Two, "Barcelona".
3. Which actor who was in the original Broadway cast of 'Company' went on to star in a sitcom alongside Candice Bergen?

Answer: Charles Kimbrough

Charles Kimbrough was also in Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park with George", but is best known to television audiences as Jim Dial from "Murphy Brown".
4. Which original Broadway cast member was also seen on NBC's "Saturday Night Live"?

Answer: George Coe

Coe appeared in six episodes of SNL, the last one being in 1978. He has also been in "Mame" and "On The Twentieth Century" on Broadway and in "Mighty Ducks" in the movies.
5. Complete this lyric from "The Little Things You Do Together": "It's not talk of God and the _________ ahead that allows you to get through the worst . . . "

Answer: Decade

"The Little Things You Do Together" is sung by Joanne and the company, describing the things that make a marriage work, such as swapping clothes, quitting cigarettes and destroying children...together!
6. The recording session of the cast recording was taped. Which song is shown last on the tape?

Answer: The Ladies Who Lunch

For some reason, the tape does not show Dean Jones singing "Being Alive" after "The Ladies Who Lunch", as it normally happens in the show. Instead, "Ladies" comes after "Being Alive".
7. Which song was not included in the original production, but is included in the mid-90's revival?

Answer: Marry Me A Little

"Marry Me a Little" is the Act One finale song sung by Robert, in which he hopes for a relationship that is not too close. It is also included in the John Doyle-staged production in Cincinatti, which closed April 14th, 2006.
8. What comes to David's mind when he sees Robert?

Answer: The Seagram's building

David says this to the rest of the friends in the song "Side by Side by Side", which is immediately followed by "What Would We Do Without You?".
9. Robert is married at the end of the show.

Answer: False

At the end of the show, Robert makes up his mind to let someone into his life enough to have a meaningful romantic relationship with them. Even though it's not the ending Sondheim wished for, it's still a very touching finale to a wonderful show.
10. What drug does Robert try?

Answer: Marijuana

Robert tries marijuana in a failed attempt to be cool. Curiously enough, marijuana has helped cure Sondheim of many a case of writer's block, as he himself admits in Meryle Secrest's biography.
11. Complete this lyric from "Side by Side by Side": "Three is company, safe and ________"

Answer: cheery

In "Side by Side by Side", Robert's friends praise Robert's character as he sings about being alone, which he claims he likes. The song opens Act Two, along with "What Would We Do Without You", which follows right after the song.
12. We know Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics and music to "Company", (or at least I hope you do!) but who wrote the book?

Answer: George Furth

Furth's other stage credits include "Merrily We Roll along" and "Getting Away With Murder", both of which he wrote the script for. A little-known fact is that Furth was also a performer on Broadway before he began writing shows.
13. In "Getting Married Today", how many paperweights did Amy get?

Answer: Forty-Seven

Suffering from intense pre-wedding jitters, bride-to-be Amy thanks her friends and guests for, among other gifts, the forty-seven paperweights. What would one do with forty-seven paperweights anyway?
14. Who hosted the concert version of the musical in 1993, which reunited the original Broadway cast?

Answer: Patti LuPone

Patti LuPone is a celebrated Broadway actress whose other stage credits include "Anything Goes" and two productions of "Sweeney Todd": one with George Hearn in 2001 and the other on Broadway in 2006 with Michael Cerveris.
15. In "The Ladies who Lunch", what does Joanne urge the audience to do?

Answer: Rise

At the end of the song, Joanne repeats the word "Rise!" to the audience. I don't know WHY she does this, but I think the alcohol she consumes throughout the song may have something to do with it.
