Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hitler launched a war under the slogan 'Ein Volk. Ein Reich. Ein Fuehrer.' Churchill replied with an even stronger quaternary pattern as a reply. What was the exact line? "I have nothing to offer but _____."

Answer: Blood, toil, tears and sweat

Check at www.sourcetext.com grammarian May be that was the decisive step in Churchill's moral warfare. Didn't he also use a quaternary line in: 'We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills.' Churchill probably was another of those leaders who are best when they have to unite the strengths of a nation against a common enemy.
2. Also film titles like the ternary pattern. Which of these is the correct title with all the words in the correct order?

Answer: 'Sex, lies and videotape'.

If the longest word comes at the end there is much more of a rhythmic balance between step one + two on the one hand and step three, which should be like the sounding of a bell.
3. What is the usual phrasing of the (English language) shooting instructions at an execution by firing-squad?

Answer: Ready. Aim. Fire.

There is of course something immensely sad in the spectacle of some twelve chaps deciding they are going to finish off the life of a defenseless fellow human. That must be why it was all integrated into a simple drill-pattern.
4. What is the missing word in this phrasing: Hear no ______, see no _______ , speak no ________?

Answer: evil

Lechery and lewdness were popular vices in Shakespeare's plays. The term evil is much more general and profound because the Bible explores not just the sex-behaviour but the heart and kidneys of the human creature. The Devil is of course the Arch-Liar, as Milton would not have failed to observe.
5. What's the missing word: Government of the _______, by the _______ and for the _____?

Answer: people

Government is often a matter of the People vs. the various people who think THEY are the people. The old problem of Us against Them.
6. In writing the three Rs in education do not all of them begin in R. In speech however you can make them sound like that. What's the missing one in this phrasing: Reading, Riting and ___________

Answer: Rithmetic

These basics of education are often seen as the essentials of education. Some pedagogues have their doubts, and see them as the basics of a past age. It's typical that the ability to speak and communicate well is not even mentioned.
7. The Viennese believed in 'Wein, Weib und Gesang.' In English this is:

Answer: Wine, women and song.

The German is clearly the original here and also has a nicer final rhythmic pattern as it ends with a 'blast'- Gesang, the iambic effect of which vibrates more.
8. Most such phrasings have a rigorous inner structure. What is the dominant word order when we describe what we use to eat?

Answer: Knife, fork and spoon.

What regulates the order in such sequences is usually a matter of rhythm. Sometimes there can be another explanation as in Atomic, Biological and Chemical weapons being called ABC - weapons, when the order of the alphabet is chosen.
9. The spirit of a real feast is probably best caught in the slogan: Eat, drink and be ___________

Answer: merry

The three-step phenomenon also occurs in the Bible. When angels are sent as messengers, the visit or the address usually has to be repeated three times. Example: the angel who visits Samuel.
10. In court we swear that we shall speak the ____, the whole ____ and nothing but the ______.

Answer: truth

The point that we have to say it three times may point to the scepticism of the judges.
