Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is just a little quiz on ventriloquism. However, I am not going to ask you the questions. The questions will be asked by my friend, Johnny Mac. Say hello to the nice trivia players, Johnny Mac. Hello trivia players. For my first question I would like to know which of the following puppets was a character created by Shari Lewis?

Answer: Charlie Horse

Born Shari Hurwitz, Shari Lewis (1933-1998) voiced such characters as Charlie Horse and Hush Puppy, but she was most famous for a puppet created out of a sock, named Lambchop. She appeared on "Captain Kangaroo" in the fifties and then she landed her own show, "The Shari Lewis Show" in 1960.

Her career also included several specials, a highly acclaimed 1998 TV series called "The Charlie Horse Music Pizza," 12 Emmys and a Peabody award and she co-wrote (along with her husband Jeremy Tarcher) an episode of the original "Star Trek" series entitled, "The Lights of Zetar" (From the Internet Data Base).
2. "That was very good Johnny Mac. Would you like to ask the next question"? "Sure, hey, what do you mean wood? Is that some kind of a crack? Speaking of cracks, your hands are cold. But I digress. In a classic episode of "The Twilight Zone" entitled "The Dummy", Clift Robertson plays a ventriloquist named Jerry Etherson who thinks his dummy is alive. What is the name of his dummy"?

Answer: Willy

Jerry not only thinks the dummy is alive, but that he is evil. Fortunately Jerry is able to break from Willy with a new act. His new dummy Goofy Goggles has no mind of its own. But Jerry is doomed when Willy tricks him into destroying Goofy Goggles.
3. "Ooh Professorjon, I like stories about the dummy being real. There was another episode from "The Twilight Zone" that featured a dummy named Caesar, who was alive. What does he do to his master"?

Answer: Tells him how to commit burglary

In "Caesar and Me", Jackie Cooper stars as a ventriloquist who can't make ends meet so Caesar directs him so that he can commit several small robberies. He finally bungles a job and is turned over to the police by the bratty neighbor child, who then becomes the owner of Caesar. And they have big plans as soon as the young lady gets rid of her aunt.
4. "I want everyone to know that while Johnny Mac is asking this next question, my lips will not move at all". "Hello out there in trivia land. I would like to know which of the following was the name of Wayland Flowers famous dummy"?

Answer: Madame

All right, who answered Professorjon? Wayland Flowers(1939-1988) and Madame were semi-regulars on "Hollywood Squares" in 1966 and from 1978-1979. They also had their own show in 1982 entitled "Madame's Place".
5. Well this quiz is going fine Johnny Mac, but I believe we have to make it harder. Johnny Mac will now ask the next question while I am drinking a glass of water. "Thank you Professorjon. Perhaps the greatest and most well known ventriloquist was Edgar Bergen who created Charlie McCarthy. For what accessory was Charlie McCarthy known"?

Answer: Monocle

A tremendously talented man, Edgar Bergen, (1903-1978) and Charlie McCarthy, (along with his top hat and monocle) first became famous for their radio show, which is amazing because it was a ventriloquist act that could not be seen by its audience. Bergen, who also created the slow witted Mortimer Snerd, made several movies, including the 1939 classic, "You Can't Cheat an Honest Man", in which he traded insults with W.C. Fields. Bergen also appeared in numerous TV shows, including episodes of "The Muppets", and "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In".

He was also honored with a stamp in 1991 that commemorated famous comedians. His daughter, Candice, grew up in the spotlight, but became famous in her own right as an actress, starring in the TV series "Murphy Brown".
6. "You know you spilled water all over the place, Professorjon? Now I'm waterlogged. In the episode of "The Simpsons" entitled, "Krusty Gets Cancelled" what is the name of the dummy voiced by Arthur Crandall that is responsible for Krusty's poor ratings"?

Answer: Gabbo

Gabbo (who looks a little bit like the famous 1950 puppet Howdy Doody)is a cute little fellow who could take America by storm. He already has a punch line; "I'm a bad little boy". But Bart and Lisa are able to get Krusty back in shape and they get several celebrities, such as Bette Midler and Johnny Carson, to appear on his comeback special, and Krusty is saved from cancellation.
7. What is the name of the Museum in Kentucky devoted to ventriloquism?

Answer: The Vent Haven Museum

The Vent Haven Museum, located in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky, houses the world's largest collection of ventriloquist's dolls and memorabilia. The Museum also features a library, films, photographs and props, and Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. The original collection was begun by W.S. Berger, who fell in love with ventriloquism and began amassing ventriloquist memorabilia in the 1930's. Before he died in 1972, he set up a trust fund so that future generations would be able to enjoy his fine collection. You can find out more at www.venthaven.com/
8. What is the dummy voiced by Brad Cummings?

Answer: a dinosaur

Brad Cummings' dummy is Rex, who is a T-rex.
9. What 1970s television series featured ventriloquist Jay Johnson?

Answer: Soap

"Soap" ran on ABC from 1977-1981. The series starred Katherine Helmond, Catheryn Damon, Richard Mulligan, Robert Mandan, Diana Canova and Billy Crystal. It was a spoof of soap operas, usually featuring several different plots going at the same time. The focus of the show was two families, the Tates and the Campbells. Jay Johnson played Chuck Campbell and his dummy was Bob Campbell.

In one of the featured plots, Peter Campbell (Played by Robert Urich) is murdered and Chuck and Bob are both suspects.

It was all right, though. They alibied each other. After "Soap" Jay Johnson made countless commercials, appeared on HBO specials and appeared live on stage. For more information on Jay Johnson visit www.monkeyjoke.com
