quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A couple who has recently got married can be called what?

Answer: newlyweds

2. A baby who is just a few days old.

Answer: newborn

An example of #1 and #2 written in sentence form could go something like this: The newlywed couple has newborn twin boys.
3. To refuse to cooperate with somebody by avoiding answering questions or providing information.

Answer: stonewall

Example of 'stonewall' written in sentence form: When the police officer interrogated the suspect, he was up against a stonewall.
4. A new user of online computer services, especially the internet.

Answer: newbie

I came across this definition in the "Encarta World English Dictionary." I didn't even know there was such a thing. Probably because I am a newbie myself.
5. A tendon. Vigorous strength; muscular power.

Answer: sinew

Example of 'sinew' in a sentence: The man tore a sinew in his arm while lifting weights.
6. Small publication containing news of interest chiefly to a special group.

Answer: newsletter

Example of 'newsletter' in a sentence: The manager of the bank handed out a newsletter to each of the employees.
7. To be filled with more news and gossip.

Answer: newsier

Example of 'newsier' in a sentence: The newspaper writer's article was newsier than his competitor's article.
8. This person can be referred to as someone who has recently joined something or recently arrived somewhere.

Answer: newcomer

Sometimes when one might move to a new town or city, they can be called the newcomer of that place. You might hear someone ask, "Have you met the newcomer or newcomers yet?"
9. A place where one might purchase newspapers only.

Answer: newsstand

I don't know if newsstands are too popular anymore. I know here, where I live, there's no such thing. We have what I can only describe as similar to a vending machine, where you put your money in , open the door, and take your paper. Maybe these are considered newsstands now, I'm not sure. When I picture a newsstand though, I picture an actual person there selling newspapers.
10. Green algae that grow in fresh or slightly salty water that have jointed branches, often encrusted with lime.

Answer: stonewort

Another word I didn't know existed until I saw it in the "Encarta World English Dictionary." One might say my fish pond is full of stonewort.
11. Somebody who gathers and spreads gossip.

Answer: newsmonger

I think most people would agree that tabloid magazines are full of newsmongers.
12. A post supporting the handrail of a staircase at the top or bottom or on a landing.

Answer: newel

Example of 'newel' in a sentence: The newel is starting to crack.
13. One giving a radio or television broadcast of news.

Answer: newscaster

Well, we now know what a newsmonger is. One might think this definition fits a newsman too, but the definition for newsman differs slightly in that he not only reports news, but can gather or edit news as well.
14. New, modern, unfamiliar and probably not worth it.

Answer: newfangled

Example of 'newfangled' in a sentence: He can never get these newfangled mobile phones to work right. This word is usually not used in a positive way!
15. OK, let's make this last one simple. To make something new or as if new again.

Answer: renew

Well, I hope you enjoyed my quiz and possibly learned some "new" words. I got most of the definitions from the "Encarta World English Dictionary" and the "Mirriam-Webster Online Collegiate Dictionary." Both of these are available online. Only a few definitions were of my own.
