Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Welcome Hercules! Your first task should you choose to accept it will be to travel to Nemea and kill a certain ferocious beast. You may not use arrows, knives or rayguns. What kind of beast is Hercules going to kill?

Answer: lion

Game playing hint:
Since the lion was of supernatural parentage it was impervious to weapons so the secret to killing was to block off one opening of the lion's cave and crawl in and throttle it with your bare hands.
Hercules did this and got himself a lovely cloak and helmet.
2. Very good, Hercules! Your next task is to go to the Swamps of Lerna to seek out a many-headed beast and kill it. What name is given to this beast?

Answer: Hydra

Game playing hint:
If you chop a head off the Hydra, two more grow in its place so you need a partner. In Hercules' case, his nephew Iolaus was there and when Hercules chopped off a head, Iolaus would sear the wound shut with a torch so the head would not grow back. And when Hercules chopped off the final head that was supposedly immortal, he buried it deep beneath a rock.
3. Excellent Hercules! Now for your next task I need you to capture the Cerynitian Hind. The Cerynitian Hind was sacred to which goddess?

Answer: Artemis

Game playing hint:
Since the hind was sacred to Artemis, drawing blood would not do so you must find a way of stopping it without drawing blood. What Hercules did was to fire an arrow between the tendons and bones of the two forelegs thereby pinning it down without drawing blood.
4. Well done Hercules! Now if you should choose to do so, your next task is to go to Mount Erymanthus and bring me the Erymanthian Boar...alive! During this task Hercules visited Pholus who accidentally killed himself. How did this happen?

Answer: He accidentally dropped a poison arrow on his foot

Game playing hint:
Since the trick here is to catch the boar alive you need to trap it in something. Fortunately on Mount Erymanthus there was lots of snow so Hercules chased the boar into a snowbank which immobilized it so he could hoist it on his shoulder and carry it back alive.
5. Very good again! Try this one, go to my cousin in Peloponnesus and clean out his stables...in one day! Who is Eurystheus' cousin?

Answer: King Augeas

Game playing hint:
Since the stables hadn't been cleaned in 30 years and was inhabitated by 3000 oxen, you would need a great water supply to get the stables clean in one day. Hercules did it by diverting two rivers to run through the stables.
6. Boy, you're good! Ok next task! This one takes you to Lake Stymphalus where I want you to kill the Stymphalian Birds. Who gave Hercules magical castanets to help him with this task?

Answer: Athena

Game playing hint:
Since the birds in this swamp feast on human flesh, shoot feathers of brass and there's a lot of them, killing them won't be easy. You need to scare the birds somehow. Hercules used some magic castanets given to him by Athena, the noise scared the birds into the air and all he did was pick them off with arrows.
7. Wow, another one done! All right for your next task, you'll need to go to the countryside of Crete where there is a creature called the Cretan Bull (father of the Minotaur) causing all sorts of problems. Please get rid of it. Who is the mother of the Minotaur?

Answer: Queen Pasiphae

Game playing hint:
This is relatively easy. Although the beast belches flames, all you need to do is overpower it with greater strength. Hercules did this and sent the Cretan Bull back to the mainland where it then became a problem that Theseus had to deal with.
8. I'll have to come up with harder tasks! Ok, next task! Bring me the mares of Diomedes. What was the name of Hercules' squire?

Answer: Abderus

Game playing hint:
The secret here is to get them soon after they have been fed. They love to eat people! Now there are a couple of stories about who Hercules fed to the mares. One states that he fed the mares their owner, Diomedes. The other states he fed them his squire, Abderus. Either way they were well fed and all Hercules did was herd them down to the sea and ship them over to Tiryns. Later he released them, where they were eaten by the wild animals on Mount Olympus.
9. You are getting oh so close! Ok, this time I need you to get my daughter a present, but not just any present. I want you to bring me Hippolyte's belt. Hippolyte was the queen of whom?

Answer: The Amazons

Game playing hint:
There isn't much of task here. Just use your charm. Hercules did that and Hippolyte willingly gave him the belt. However Hera was not pleased that it went so easily. She spread a rumour that Hippolyte was being kidnapped by the Greeks so the Amazons went to war with them. While the war was going on Hercules slipped away.
10. This is getting way too easy for you. So easy I think you owe me a couple more tasks after this one. This time I want you to bring me Geryon's cattle...alive! What was the name of the dog that guarded the cattle?

Answer: Orthus

Game playing hint:
Secret here is to get rid of the dog. Quite simple for Hercules. He carried a wooden club with him wherever he went. So all he did was kill the dog with the club (and killed Geryon as well). He then drove the cattle back to Greece. (special note: some of the cattle had 3 heads, others had 3 bodies)

Now you may have noticed only 10 labours. There were only 10 to start with but Eurystheus decided he was short changed so he came up with 2 more tasks- get the apples of the Hesperides and capture Cerebus. These may have to wait another day.
