The play, 'A Raisin in the Sun' is set in Southside, Chicago. The action begins in the Youngers' living room which shows signs of weariness and poverty.

Ruth is approximately 30 years of age. It is clear that life has not been kind to her. She seems be the mainstay of the family. The play begins with Ruth getting everyone ready to start the day.
3. What were the Youngers expecting to receive at the beginning of the play?

Answer: $10,000

The Youngers were expecting a cheque for $10,000. This sum of money came about as a result of Big Walter's death. It was to be paid to Mama from his life insurance company.

Walter Lee wants Mama to allow him to invest the money she received in a liquor shop. He wants to join with his two friends, Willy Harris and Bobo, to begin this venture. Mama, however, refuses to even discuss the matter because of her Christian morals.

Answer: Asagai

Beneatha has two boyfriends. They are George Murchison and Asagai. Beneatha prefers Asagai even though George is from a wealthy and socially prominent family.

Ruth faints and on visiting the doctor she finds out that she is pregnant. When Walter proves to be unreceptive Ruth contemplates having an abortion.

Mr Lindner came to discourage the Youngers from moving to Clybourne Park. The residents of Clybourne Park were all white individuals who did not wish for coloured persons to take up residence in their community.

Answer: Willy Harris ran off with it.

Walter had given his friend Willy Harris not just his $3500 but also the $3000 that should have been for Beneatha's education to invest in the liquor store deal. When Bobo turned up with the news that Willy had run off with all the cash Mama became enraged and began to beat Walter in his face. Beneatha intervened and weakness overtook Mama.
10. What decision do the Youngers make at the end of the play?

Answer: to move to Clyboune Park

At the end of the play, the Youngers decide to move to Clybourne Park in spite of all the challenges they would face. The moving men and Mr. Linder arrive almost simultaneously. Walter stands up to Mr. Lindner and informs him that the family will move into their new house at Clybourne Park.

The play ends with Mama taking one last look at the old apartment before leaving. As the lights go down the door opens and Mama rushes back in to get her plant and leaves for the final time.
