Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story begins, "To Sherlock Holmes she is always THE woman." Who is this mystery woman?

Answer: Irene Adler

Irene Adler: THE woman who beat Sherlock Holmes at his own Game! Lucy Ferrier was a character in "A Study In Scarlet". Helen Stoner is from "The Adventure Of The Speckled Band". Mrs. Hudson was Holmes's landlady.
2. Sherlock Holmes is explaining to Dr. Watson that his enormous skill is that he not only sees, he observes. What question does he ask Dr. Watson to answer to prove his point?

Answer: How many steps are there which lead up from the hall to the room they're in?

Holmes says: "...you have frequently seen the steps which lead up from the hall to this room."
Watson: "Frequently."
Holmes: "How often?"
Watson: "Some hundreds of times."
Holmes: "Then how many are there?"
He not only proved his point, he was clearly shown his superiority. The answer, by the way, is seventeen steps.
3. Who was the client in this case?

Answer: Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigmond von Ormstein

Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigmond von Ormstein, the Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein, and hereditary King of Bohemia, came in wearing a mask and asked to be referred to as Count Von Kramm. Sherlock Holmes quickly saw through the disguise and called him "Your Majesty". Johann Sebastian Strauss was an Austrian composer, and, again, Mrs. Hudson was the landlady.
4. How tall was the client?

Answer: Not less than six feet six inches tall

Six feet six inches tall? That's tall now, but for the time this was written it was huge! It's never disclosed how tall Mrs. Hudson is, but she is presumably much shorter than the client or her height would have been commented on.
5. In this case there is an incriminating photograph of the client with THE woman. She is blackmailing the client, and this is her proof of the affair. Why does it have to be recovered within the next three days?

Answer: The client is announcing his betrothal to a different woman

"Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned / Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned" is a well-known quotation from the play "Mourning Bride" by William Congreve; but that's another quiz. I doubt the Grand Duke wanted to date Mrs. Hudson.
6. Holmes followed, incognito, THE woman and another man to The Church of St. Monica. When Sherlock Holmes arrived, with his identity not revealed, he was excitedly asked to do a favor. What was he asked to do?

Answer: To stand as witness to their marriage

Very interesting. She's blackmailing one man, but marrying another. What a woman. No wonder Sherlock Holmes calls her THE woman! To everyone's relief, Mrs. Hudson is fine!
7. How does Sherlock Holmes get into THE woman's house to look for the picture?

Answer: In full disguise, he feigned being hurt in a scuffle outside her house.

Sherlock Holmes would never stoop to breaking and entering. Well, he would and frequently does stoop to breaking and entering, but not this time. He wouldn't put Mrs. Hudson in such a situation, either. Well, he probably would, but he didn't.
8. How did Sherlock Holmes get the woman to reveal where she had the picture hidden?

Answer: He had Watson throw a smoke bomb through the window, then yelled FIRE.

When she thought the house was on fire, she went to save the picture because of its value. Mrs. Hudson was not with them on this excursion.
9. The smoke bomb was discovered and discarded. When Sherlock Holmes left the house having told THE woman, he felt better. He met up with Dr. Watson, walked home, and when they were outside his door, someone said, "Good-night, Mister Sherlock Holmes." Who said this?

Answer: THE woman in disguise as a young boy

When Sherlock Holmes went back for the picture, it wasn't there. That's when he figured out that THE woman had duped him. Mrs. Hudson, again, wasn't with them.
10. What was found in place of the picture?

Answer: A different picture and a note

The note promised that she would never blackmail Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigmond von Ormstein, Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein, and hereditary King of Bohemia again. The client took her at her word and was satisfied! There are, thankfully, no pictures of Mrs. Hudson.
