Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Robert Langdon received a call very early in the morning from the director of CERN, Maximilian Kohler. Kohler said he had prepared a plane to fetch Langdon to his office. Which country was CERN located in?

Answer: Switzerland

Langdon was deep in his slumber when a phone call woke him up. Kohler said he got Langdon's number from his website. At first, Langdon was reluctant to go but he changed his mind after he saw the image that was faxed to him. The image showed a dead man who was brutally murdered with the ambigrammatic word "illuminati" branded on his chest.

Kohler informed Langdon that his office was just an hour away from Langdon's residence. Little did Langdon realize that the headquarter of CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) was actually located in Geneva, Switzerland, and not in the US.
2. The dead scientist was identified as Leonardo Vetra. He had been working together with his daughter, Vittoria on a research in the field of physics. Vittoria got the shock of her life when she learned that something was stolen from their laboratory. What was it?

Answer: A quarter of a gram of antimatter

The cold-blooded killer murdered Leonardo without showing any mercy before cutting out Leonardo's eyeball in order for him to gain access into the laboratory. The security system of the laboratory was equipped with a high-tech retina scan machine. It was an eerie sight for Vittoria when she noticed that the retina scan machine was smeared with dried blood. She looked on the floor only to find out his father's eyeball was lying on the ground.

The antimatter particle that was kept in the canister was highly explosive. The canister containing the antimatter particle was stolen from the lower lab, Haz-Mat chamber and was to be hidden somewhere in the Vatican City. Langdon believed that it was an act of the ancient brotherhood Illuminati.
3. Langdon told Vetra that he often encountered the number 503 in Galileo's works. He believed that this number was a reference to a book published by Galileo. This book contained crucial information pointing to the first location of the Path of Illuminati. Which book was it?

Answer: Diagramma

To avoid confusion, historians labeled Galileo's three works as DI ("Dialogo"), DII ("Discorsi") and DIII ("Diagramma"). The book "Diagramma" was also known as The Diagram of Truth. Langdon said there was only one copy remaining in the world and it was stored in the Secrets Vatican Archives. DIII was 503 in Roman numeral system.
4. Vittoria Vetra found an iambic pentameter hidden in one of Galileo's books. What was the missing word in this poem written by John Milton? "From Santi's earthly tomb with demon's hole, 'cross Rome the mystic elements unfold. The path of light is laid, the sacred test, let _____ guide you on your lofty quest."

Answer: Angels

According to Langdon, the ancient brotherhood Illuminati needed to recruit new members every now and then. So, Galileo hid the secret location of the meeting place, or the Church of Illuminati, in a riddle in one of his books. This riddle was actually a poem, or more specifically an iambic pentameter written by an Illumanitus, John Milton.

Those who wished to join the brotherhood had to solve the riddle contained in the poem. They had to travel to all four Altars of Science before arriving at the final destination, the Church of Illuminati.
5. Langdon believed that there were all together four Illuminati sculptures that were placed in four different churches in Rome that provided the clues for the Path of Illuminati. Which artist designed these four sculptures?

Answer: Bernini

Bernini was an Illuminatus. He was the Illuminati's unknown master or Il Maestro Ignoto. He designed his sculptures carefully and they were placed in four specific churches in Rome. Each sculpture was dedicated to one of the four mystic elements. They were Habakkuk and the Angel (earth), The Breath of God (air), The Ecstasy of St Teresa (Fire) and The Fountain of the Four Rivers (water).
6. The Hassasin called and threatened Langdon that the ancient brotherhood Illuminati had resurfaced. He would kill off a cardinal every hour starting at 8pm. He described this event as a mathematical progression of death. The first cardinal was killed in the Chigi Chapel with the ambigrammatic word "earth" branded on his chest. How did he die?

Answer: He suffocated.

Langdon recalled back the first line of the poem, "from Santi's earthly tomb with demon's hole". He knew that Santi was the last name of the famous sculptor, Raphael. When he got his thoughts more organized, he was confident that the killing of the first cardinal would take place in the Pantheon, which was the place where Raphael was buried. He told Vetra that the "demon's hole" in the poem referred to the oculus, or the circular opening at the roof of the Pantheon building.

However, Commander Olivetti was skeptical about this. He told Langdon that it was almost impossible for the murderer to kill the cardinal in an open tourist spot and get away without being noticed.

It was at the last minute when Vetra realized that they had come to the wrong place. The actual killing place was at the Chigi Chapel, a chapel that was named after Alexander Chigi, a wealthy patron. The chapel was known as Capella della Terra in Italian, or the Chapel of the Earth in English.

Cardinal Ebner from Frankfurt, Germany was found dead in the Chigi Chapel. His mouth was stuffed with dirt. He suffocated long before Langdon arrived. Ebner's chest was branded with the ambigrammatic word "earth".
7. Cardinal Lamassé was killed at the West Ponente, which housed the sculpture The Breath of God. The atmosphere intensified when Vetra learned that the late Pope did not die of stroke. Rather, he was poisoned by what medication?

Answer: Heparin

Cardinal Lamassé's lungs were punctured by the Hassasin before a passer-by saw him being wheeled across the square. The Hassasin then slipped away and disappeared into the crowd. A girl who was feeding the pigeons screamed in terror when she saw the old man collapse.

The late Pope was diagnosed with thrombophlebitis. As a marine biologist, Vetra knew that if one consumed heparin in great quantity, the overdose could be fatal. Carlo led Vetra to the late Pope's sarcophagus where Vetra performed the first ever Pope autopsy. It turned out that the Pope was indeed poisoned by his own medication. Vetra believed that it was an act of the ancient brotherhood Illuminati, but little did she know that the late Pope was actually poisoned by Camerlengo Carlo.
8. Cardinal Guidera was the third victim of the night. He was burned alive in a chapel in Santa Maria della Vittoria. An hour later, who met the same fate when he drowned in The Fountain of the Four Rivers outside the Church of St Agnes in Agony?

Answer: Cardinal Aldo Baggia

Langdon had no clue which Bernini's sculptor was dedicated to the element of fire. So, he went to the Secret Vatican Archive again to look for more information. It was not until the last minute when he came across the reference to one of Bernini's works, The Ecstasy of St Teresa. Langdon had no doubt the third element, fire, referred to he angel's fiery spear. Langdon could not save Cardinal Guidera in time as the Hassasin was going after him. Cardinal Guidera's chest was branded with the ambigrammatic word "fire".

An hour later, the Hassasin arrived at The Fountain of the Four Rivers outside the Church of St Agnes in Agony with Cardinal Aldo Baggia in his van. Langdon tried to stop him but he was too late. Cardinal Aldo Baggia drowned when Langdon fought for his life with the Hassasin.
9. The dove at the top of the tower of The Fountain of the Four Rivers was the clue that pointed to the final destination of the meeting place of the ancient brotherhood Illuminati. Where was the Church of Illuminati?

Answer: Castle of the Angel

There were all together twelve angels statues that were carved by Bernini himself that were positioned at the Castle of the Angel. There was a tunnel, known as The Little Passage, or Il Passeto that connected this castle to the Vatican City. The Hassasin used this tunnel to travel in and out from the Vatican City.
10. Janus ordered the Hassasin to kidnap four cardinals and kill them one by one. Janus also murdered the Pope. The identity of Janus was not revealed until the end of the story. Who was he?

Answer: Carlo Ventresca

While Leonardo Vetra thought that science went well together with religion, Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca thought that the fast development in the field of science would threaten the very foundation of religion. Leonardo said he could prove that Genesis was plausible and he was eager to show his work to the Pope.

However, the Pope could not travel to Leonardo's laboratory in Switzerland without being noticed. So, the Pope sent Carlo instead. When Carlo saw the destructive power of the new antimatter technology, he started planning to get rid of Leonardo.

He hired the Hassasin and executed his plan well. He also ordered the Hassasin to kill the four cardinals.
