Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Barefoot in the Park", the main characters are Paul and Corie, who have just come back from their honeymoon to start the play. What is Paul, and now Corie's, last name?

Answer: Bratter

Paul and Corie Bratter have been married for six days total when they move in to their new "apartment". They have no idea what is in store for them, but they are so madly in love in the first act, it doesn't matter. Much.
2. A visitor from a utility comes to the apartment in both the first and third acts. Can you tell me what utility he works for?

Answer: Telephone

Specifically, the man was from AT&T. AT&T almost had a monopoly on the telephone business before they split into the "Baby Bells". And with the competition nowadays for your phone dollars, and in this age of product placement, one wonders how much they would have had to put down for that mention.

The worker tells Corie his name is Harry Pepper, and if they "ever have trouble, please, don't ask for Harry Pepper". But he ends up coming back in the third act to fix the phone cord Paul ripped out of the wall in their heated argument in the second act.
3. On stage, the exact time frame isn't mentioned, but we do hear the month mentioned. From this information, can you tell me what season it is?

Answer: Winter

February is cold for New York, and they venture out a few times in the wintry temperatures. Victor insists that a scarf and a hat is all that is necessary for the sub zero temperatures.
4. Paul arrives home from work for his first day in the new apartment. So much is wrong, it is easier to say what isn't wrong with this apartment. Hey, good question. What ISN'T wrong with the apartment?

Answer: There is no bathroom in the apartment; you go down the hall.

Surprise, they DO have a bathroom, but it is only a 3/4 bath, with no tub. This upsets Paul, he "likes baths". The heat isn't working and Paul discovers why it seems as cold inside as out, by finding the hole in the skylight. And later in the play Paul states they will be sleeping "from left to right", due to the bed and bedroom being so small.
5. There are more visitors to Paul and Corie's apartment in the first act, what are most of them doing when arriving at their door?

Answer: Breathing heavy from all the steps

"Six flights! Did you know it was six flights?" is Paul's opening line on stage, said in between panting. Apparently it is only five flights if you don't count the stoop. Regardless, it is a fair amount of stairs to take in a building with no elevator.
6. Victor Velasco, an eccentric neighbor of theirs, makes his stage appearance in the first act, and in the second act, Corie sets her mother up with him. Victor serves them Knichi. But there are rules to eating Knichi. Which of these is NOT a regulation during Knichi eating?

Answer: Dip Knichi in your sake before eating.

Knichi turns out to be fictional, which makes them incredibly easy to make. Just as long as the finished product you come up with is able to "pop" into your mouth. There is no sake mentioned in the play, and the nationality of the dish is not mentioned either. Paul forgets the "pop" rule and nibbles at it. this causes it to be strangely bitter.
7. There is a European liqueur that Victor introduces to the group during the night. What is it called?

Answer: Ouzo (Uzu)

Ouzo is a Greek liqueur that has a black licorice taste. In the play, it is spelled "Uzu"; I have only seen it in stores as "Ouzo". The time I drank it, it did not have the same effect on me as it did on the characters, as they were no longer able to make a fist. Victor warned them of this effect prior to them drinking it.
8. Throughout the play, Corie's mother is simply referred to in the script as "Mother". But we learn her full name during the date with Victor Velasco. What is her full name?

Answer: Ethel Banks

Victor demands that if they are to run off to Staten Island to continue the date, they must be on a first-name basis. So this is how we find out what Mom's name is.
9. One of the characters in "Barefoot in the Park" does actually go barefoot for a walk in the park. Who is it?

Answer: Paul

In all the complaints from Corie that Paul is a big fuddy-duddy and that he isn't even fun drunk, Paul grabs his bottle of scotch during an argument, exits, and comes back looped, stating, in a colorful way, that "he's been walking barefoot in the park".

They vow to come a little closer to center to make the marriage work, Paul a little less a "stuffed shirt", and Corie a little less flighty and impulsive.
10. Sadly, in the end of "Barefoot in the Park", Paul and Corie end up divorced. But it is amicable, so Neil doesn't leave us with an empty feeling leaving the theater.

Answer: False

Quite the opposite, in fact, as Corie professes her love while Paul is on the ledge outside the skylight, still "stinkin' drunk". Paul reciprocates, and the play ends, with Paul trying to figure out how to get back in.
