Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Nathaniel first summons Bartimaeus, what is the first charge that he gives him?

Answer: Tell me your name

Though Nathaniel already knows Bartimaeus's name (he couldn't have summoned him without it) he first asks this of Bartimaeus. The next command, but not charge, is for him to obey his will. This is said after Bartimaeus makes a particularly long and boasting statement.

He then charges Bartimaeus to take the amulet from a certain prominent magician, Simon Lovelace, and upon return hide it in his master's office, thus getting revenge on Lovelace and protecting himself if Lovelace came calling.
2. Nathaniel charges Bartimaeus to take the Amulet of Samarkand from a powerful magician, Simon Lovelace. He eventually fufills this task, but meets up with two djinn of considerable power during his journey. Who are these djinn?

Answer: Jabor and Faquarl

Bartimaeus has a difficult time fufilling his charge commanded by Nathaniel. Sneaking into the house as a fly, he manages to spy on Simon Lovelace and a younger woman companion known as Amanda Cathcart. After listening to them for a good while, he moves out of the room and journeys to where Simon Lovelace keeps all his magical items of power. Taking the Amulet, Bartimaeus is pursued by Jabor, a djinni of considerable power.

After escaping into a closed room, Bartimaeus erects a shield to keep Jabor busy as he plans his escape. Seeing his rival, Faquarl, spinning a cleaver in his hand and telling him to hand over the Amulet, Bartimaeus is trapped.

After some quick thinking, he lets go of the shield on the door just as Jabor lets go a particulary strong detonation (typical magic attack.) This detonation hits Faquarl straight on, giving Bartimaeus the distraction he needs to escape. Though he is chased by servants of Simon Lovelace all night, his biggest problem is actually a group of teenage commoners.
3. When the punks corner Bartimaeus in an alleyway, what form does he take to scare the punks off initially?

Answer: Crocodile

This is a tricky question. Bartimaeus has a shield around him to protect from the nosy strangers, but the punks see right through it and take the weakened form of Bartimaeus by brute strength. As he is being held and talking to the leader of the group, a girl named Kitty, he changes to a Crocodile which promptly makes two off the three kids let go. One holds on and he makes a well-timed change into a fox and escapes into the night.
4. How does Bartimaeus find out Nathaniel's birth name?

Answer: Mrs Underwood says it

With this important bit of information, Bartimaeus can send powerful forms of punishment right back at Nathaniel merely by saying the counter-spell and then muttering his name. Nathaniel realizes that Bartimaeus knows his name, and yet keeps him as a servant. Nathaniel deals with this threat by casting a spell of permanent confinement on a tobacco tin filled with rosemary.

This spell works quite simply; Nathaniel sets a date and if he is not alive to undo the curse, Bartimaeus will be doomed to a lifetime in a tobacco tin in the oozy mud of the Thames.

This means that if Bartimaeus causes Nathaniel harm by saying out loud his birth-name Bartimaeus will be doomed for eternity.
5. When Nathaniel originally sends Bartimaeus out to scout Lovelace's house, Bartimaeus sits in a gutter and watches the house. How long does he stay in that gutter?

Answer: 3 days

During this time Bartimaeus's essence is replenished. While scouting there he observes vicious new "triploids", vicious djinn, installed around the house of Simon Lovelace. On the third day, he sees a messenger imp flying from the house on its way to deliver its messages. Intercepting the messages from this unfortunate imp, he discovers the two messages. The first reads, "Dear Rupert (the prime minister) please accept my deepest, most humble apologies, but I may be slightly late in arriving at Parliament this evening. Something urgent has come up in relation to next week's big event and I simply must try to resolve it today. I would not wish for any of the preparations to get badly behind schedule. I do hope you will see fit to forgive me if I am delayed.
May I take this opportunity to say how eternally grateful we are to have the opportunity of hosting the conference? Amanda has already renovated the hall and is now in the process of installing new soft furnishings (in the Nouveau Persian style) in your suite. She has also ordered a large number of your favorite delicacies, including fresh lark's tongues.
Apologies again. I will certainly be present for your address.
Your faithful and unfailing servant,
Simon"

The second is far more vague, reading only "The tickets remain lost. We may have to cancel the performance. Please consider our options. See you at P. tonight." On the imp's information he decides that he should go to Pinn's accoutrements. It is there the story begins to unfold.
6. At Pinn's, Bartimaeus encounters a servant foliot. What is his name?

Answer: Simpkin

Simpkin is an interesting fellow, a servant that has grown so accustomed to serving his master he no longer needs formal charges to obey him. Bartimaeus comes disguised in the semblance of a lowly messenger imp who needs to drop off a letter for Sholto Pinn, the proprietor.

While talking to Simpkin, he learns important information about the comings and goings of various magicians. When Sholto Pinn himself shows up, and Bartimaeus makes up a message committed to memory, a problem arises. It seems that Simon Lovelace had met him for a pre-arranged lunch, and there was no point for Bartimaeus to be there delivering a message for him.

At this point, Bartimaeus makes a dash for the entrance in the form of a peregrine falcon, but is thwarted by two djinn imprisoned inside faceless manikins wielding silver blades.

Avoiding their deadly cold touch and setting one on fire, Bartimaeus breaks through the window, but is promptly caught by an afrit that was sent by the government.
7. While imprisoned in the mournful orb by Jessica Whitwell in the Tower of London, Bartimaeus is freed by Jabor and Farquarl. What is wrong with Bartimaeus's raven guise he uses when he escapes with Faquarl?

Answer: His beak is blue

Escaping from the tower proves to be as difficult as one would think. They become ravens and fly with them away from the Tower of London. However, Bartimaeus is fooled by a double image trick, where they can make a structure appear twice, in this case the Tower of London.

This costs them valuable time. After a while they realize that the raven guise isn't working, and they latch onto a car as Stygian implets. Bartimaeus manages to escape from Faquarl when a young girl says that Faquarl smells of petrol.

This "sparks" Bartimaeus to send a small spark of fire at Faquarl, igniting him in flames.
8. When Nathaniel and Bartimaeus journey to Heddleham Hall to foil Simon Lovelace's plan, they encounter strong defenses. Which one of these is NOT one of the defences?

Answer: a strong green afrit

The strong green afrit is actually a servant of the Prime Minister, who is attending the meeting. Bartimaeus and Nathaniel manage to enter the hall by means of stealing a van employed by Simon Lovelace to bring delicacies to the meeting. When Bartimaeus and Nathaniel are stopped by a deadly mercenary, they are saved only by Nathaniel's ability to remember and memorize incredibly quickly.

After entering Heddleham hall, Nathaniel takes the guise of a servant, whereas Bartimaeus sneaks in through a chimney.

After realizing that in the Great Hall the trickery will take place, Bartimaeus and Nathaniel manage to sneak in after Nathaniel kills Schyler, a prominent magician sent by Lovelace to persuade Nathaniel to join him. After entering the hall, Nathaniel and Bartimaeus rush to the podium, but are entrapped in an orb sent by Jessica Whitwell, master of the mournful orb. Unable to communicate with anyone outside of the orb, Nathaniel and Bartimaeus helplessly watch as a giant pentacle is unveiled, and an elemental disrupting spirit far stronger than a marid, Ramuthra, is summoned.
9. How do Nathaniel and Bartimaeus escape from stricture that Jessica Whitwell imposes on them?

Answer: Ramuthra's presence shatters it

Once Nathaniel and Bartimaeus escape from the Stricture, chaos is reigning supreme upon the hall. Bartimaeus attempts to distract Simon Lovelace by putting on the guise of a fly as Nathaniel sneaks up from behind, but only manages to be swatted away as Nathaniel is thrown bodily across the stage by Lovelace. Lovelace then summons Jabor to deal with Bartimaeus, but seems regretful as he will lose a valuable (if unintelligent) slave. Lovelace then blows the horn and decrees that Nathaniel must die first, as he poses the biggest threat. Meanwhile, Jabor and Bartimaeus fight in mid-air, but Bartimaeus prevails by giving Jabor a strong kick into the rift started by the summoning of Ramuthra.

After this is accomplished, Bartimaeus takes the semblance of Amanda, a woman believed to be romantically involved with Simon, and prances across the stage wailing at the top of her/his lungs.

As she distracts him with phrases such as "How could you do this Simon? Am I to die too?", Nathaniel then leaps and wrestles the Amulet of Samarkand from Lovelace's neck and puts it on, shielding him from the powers of Ramuthra.

As Ramuthra draws close Bartimaeus takes the summoning horn from his grasp, and Ramuthra picks up the forlorn Simon Lovelace and deposits him in its mouth. The final task, breaking the summoning horn and thus sending Ramuthra back to the Other Place, is executed by Nathaniel, who speaks the dismissal clearly and breaks the horn at the exactly correct syllable. The effects are instantaneous, as Ramuthra is drawn back into the rift as the rift seals "like a giant scar" behind it.
10. After the situation is dealt with and all is as before (other than the loss of Simon Lovelace), Nathaniel is given a new Master. Who is this new master?

Answer: Jessica Whitwell

Jessica Whitwell, master of the Mournful Orbs, is a powerful magician. She gives Nathaniel a room complete with a simple Pentacle in which he could complete minor summons. The entire incident of Lovelace's treachery is not released to the public, and all is covered up as if nothing ever happened. Nathaniel finally dismisses Bartimaeus, and thus the book ends. I hope you enjoyed this quiz, and be sure to read the next books in this thrilling trilogy.
