Within the first 3 paragraphs of this book, Kinsey has told us about her client, who was killed within a week of their meeting, and that it was August: "... the days were hot, filled with relentless sunshine and clear skies."

Bobby and Rick were driving up "the pass" when an unknown driver began to slam into the back of their car. As Bobby explains, "... Rick was killed. He bailed out and the car rolled over on him." Rick's parents never forgive Bobby and they are unable to believe that it was a murder attempt.

Kitty agrees with Bobby - someone is definitely trying to kill him. Unfortunately, she is messed up with booze, drugs, and unhappiness of her own; too much so to really help Bobby before the inevitable happens. Bobby loves Kitty very much, and when he dies, he leaves her nearly all of his estate.

After talking about Bobby's case with Glen, Kinsey realizes the immensity of the family's wealth - Glen paid $26,000 for a desk at a London auction. Kinsey asked if Glen was named after the road "West Glen", but Glen says, "... the other way around ... I wasn't named for the road. The road was named for me."

Although at the time Bobby can't remember why it is important, he remembers the address book, and he remembers that he gave it to someone, now unsure why. Later we learn that he gave it to Gus, a good friend.

When Kinsey gets the call from Derek (Bobby's stepfather), she is woken up by the phone. He tells her the horrible news: "Bobby's been killed in a car accident." The last time she saw Bobby was at the gym that morning - she can't believe it's true, and she immediately offers to help.

Kinsey travels to Moza Lowenstein's house to snoop around a bit and dig up some dirt on Lila, who is staying with Moza. She hits pay dirt when she discovers two fake driver's licenses, a slew of credit cards, and all sorts of other documents. She knows that her first impression of Lila was right - "... I wasn't sure what she was up to, but I intended to find out."

Bobby's old girlfriend, Carrie St. Cloud, tells Kinsey that Bobby was having an affair with someone else, but Carrie is unable to say who. At first, Kinsey thinks that it is Sufi, but then as the case falls into place she realizes that he was in love with Nola Fraker, Dr. Fraker's wife.

Kinsey asks Jonah, who is a police officer and former lover of hers, to check into two leads: the murder of Nola's first husband, and Henry's girlfriend, Lila. Jonah strikes oil with both investigations: Nola Fraker is suspected to be the murderous wife and Lila has numerous warrants issued for her arrest. Kinsey is able to apprehend Lila for the police, but after getting Henry his $20,000 back.

Kelly Borden, who worked at the morgue with Bobby, immediately recognized the number that Kinsey presented him. Kinsey had thought it was a phone number, but it was actually the morgue code. Kelly says, "... this is the I.D. number on a body we got in storage. I told you we had two that had been out there for years.

This is Franklin ... Franklin's black. He's a black man. Maybe it was Bobby's joke."

15. Kinsey finally solves the crime - who killed Bobby and how?

Answer: Dr. Fraker cut the brake lines in Bobby's car

Kinsey discovers that the gun used by Nora (Fraker) to kill her first husband was hidden in Franklin's body, and Bobby was trying to cover it up for her. Dr. Fraker killed Bobby, for a few reasons, one being that Bobby was having an affair with Nora. Dr. Fraker cut Bobby's brake lines in his car, and faked the autopsy reports indicating he had had a stroke.
