Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the book, what was Lord Genji waiting for?

Answer: A ship

The ship he was waiting for was the "Star of Bethlehem" which brought with it three missionaries. The ship was a merchant ship and its captain was Captain McCain. This ship was part of a prophecy for Lord Genji about a foreigner that he would meet during the New Year.

While the ship did not arrive during the Japanese New Year, it did arrive on January 1, 1861 according to the foreigners' calendar.
2. What was the name of Genji's geisha mistress?

Answer: Heiko

Heiko's full geisha name was Mayonaka no Heiko which means 'Midnight Equilibrium'. She was the most famous and beautiful geisha in Edo and had fallen in love with Lord Genji. She also served as an informant to Lord Kawakami and she reported back to him with news she gathered while spending time with Lord Genji.
3. Who was Emily engaged to marry?

Answer: Zephaniah Cromwell

Emily was supposed to marry Zephaniah, the leader of the three missionaries to Japan. He was a Right Reverend of the Light of the True Word of the Prophets of Christ Our Lord. He was not an attractive man and had bulging eyes and deep frustration lines in his face.

He was shot soon after they arrived in Japan and he died, freeing Emily from their engagement. She was only going to marry him because he offered her a chance to escape America.
4. What was the name of the ninja assassin hired by Kawakami?

Answer: Kuma

Kuma was the deadliest of the ninja. He didn't look like much; he was a middle-aged peasant. He was the one who fired the shot that killed Zephaniah Cromwell. He also raised Heiko and trained her as a ninja. He was hired by Kawakami to do his dirty work and also to look after Heiko to make sure she was doing as she was told.
5. One member from each generation of the Okumichi clan had the gift of vision and prophecy. Who told both Genji and Shigeru that they had the gift of prophecy?

Answer: Lord Kiyori

Lord Kiyori was Genji's grandfather and Shigeru's father. He was poisoned by Shigeru while Shigeru was suffering a spell of madness. Lord Kiyori also had the gift and he told both Genji and Shigeru when they were children around the age of six. Many of the Okumichi clan's samurai doubted the strength of the clan after Lord Kiyori's death.
6. According to a prophecy, an outsider was going to save Lord Genji's life during the New Year. Which of the outsiders was the one who saved his life?

Answer: Emily

Lord Genji did not know which outsider was to be the one to save his life. At first, they thought it was Zephaniah since he took a bullet shortly after arriving. They realized, however, that the bullet was not actually meant to hit Genji, meaning that Zephaniah was not the one the prophecy spoke of.

It was actually Emily who saved Genji's life while they were traveling to Cloud of Sparrows Castle. Emily and Genji were traveling together and a group of young men attacked them. Genji was badly injured. Emily shot two of the men and then built a small shelter to shield them from the cold weather and snow.

She then bound Genji's injuries and snuggled up close to him to keep him from freezing to death.
7. What present did Genji say he was going to give to Emily?

Answer: Apple Valley

Genji was grateful to Emily for saving his life. He took her on an excursion to see Apple Valley, an apple orchard that was planted by his father to please his mother and remind her of her home. Emily grew up in Apple Valley in New York and Genji's apple orchard reminded her of home.

She even climbed one of the trees after Genji doubted she could do it. Apple Valley, or 'Ringo-no-tani', was the name given to the orchard by Genji's mother.
8. Matthew Stark went to Japan to find a man named Ethan Cruz. By what name did the children of the Japanese village near Mushindo Monastery call Ethan?

Answer: Jimbo

The children referred to him as Jimbo because it was a shorter, easier version of Jim Bohannen, the name he went by as a missionary. Stark was looking for him to seek revenge for the death of his wife and step-daughters at the hands of Ethan. Ethan was orphaned as a boy and taken in and raised by Manual Cruz.

He changed his ways after he heard a True Word preacher in San Francisco. He later became a Buddhist monk at the Mushindo Monastery.
9. According to his grandfather, Genji was to only have three visions in his life. Only the first two of his visions were shown in the book. The first vision was of his death. What was the second vision of?

Answer: The birth of his child

In his first vision, he saw his death at the hand of an assassin. In this vision, there was a Lady Shizuka who ran to him and embraced him in his last moments. She appeared to be of a mixture of Japanese and outsider. She also wore Emily's locket around her neck.

In the second vision, he was waiting outside Cloud of Sparrows Castle when Hidé came to tell him the news which he already knew. He went inside and he was told that the childbirth had been difficult and that the news was not good. The baby was fine and wore Emily's locket around her neck.
10. At the beginning of every chapter in the book there was a passage from the 'Suzume-no-kumo'. What was the 'Suzume-no-kumo'?

Answer: Genji's ancestral history

The 'Suzume-no-kumo' was a compilation of the history and prophecies of his family. It started with his ancestor, Hironobu, the first Great Lord of Akaoka. The book shared its name with their castle, which in English is 'Cloud of Sparrows'. Each of Genji's ancestors would add their own story and prophecies to the book to serve as a guide and source of wisdom for the generations to come.

At the end of the book, Emily had begun translating the 'Suzume-no-kumo' into English.
