Emily Arundell is a spinster, though she has various relations who often stay with her. After a fall downstairs, she writes to Hercule Poirot - but the letter doesn't reach Poirot until after Emily's death.

Emily left the entire estate to Miss Lawson, much to the dismay of Emily's relations, who are all desperate for money.

Bob was unfairly blamed for Emily Arundell's fall down stairs, since he had a habit of leaving his ball on the stairs. However, Bob was out of the house when Emily had her fall

The phosphorus was administered in Emily Arundell's medicine over a period of time. It also explains the halo the Tripp sisters claim to have seen over Emily.

It is revealed that Arabella murdered her aunt, trying the frame her own husband, but commits suicide before justice is served, At the end of the book, Poirot is presented with Bob the dog from Miss Lawson. Poirot declares Bob is "his dog" even though Hastings says Poirot doesn't understand dog psychology :-)
