Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is not a book by Edward Rutherfurd?

Answer: Singapore

All of Rutherfurd's four novels are essentially 'biographies' of cities or regions complete with real events and imagined characters. 'Paris' hasn't been written yet (though it would be great!).
2. Where did Edward Rutherfurd grow up?

Answer: Salisbury

Rutherfurd grew up in Salisbury, which undoubtedly provided the inspiration for his first book.
3. Which of the following statements about Rutherfurd's writing method is the most correct?

Answer: Real events and people are mixed with imagined ones to complete the story

Most of the characters are imagined, but several 'real' people, such as Ivan the Terrible and Alfred the Great pepper the action to add authenticity. There is considerable speculation on some events, such as the building of Stonehenge or the murder of William II because we do not know ourselves what actually happened.
4. In terms of the calendar year at the beginning of the first chapter, the action in which novel begins first?

Answer: Sarum

Although all of Rutherfurd's books end in the present day, each begins with a distant ancestor living in the area featured in the plot. Sarum begins in around 8000 BC, Paris was never written (see Q1), Russka begins 180 AD and The Forest begins 1099 AD.

Answer: Russka

... For this was the land that would one day be known as Russia.
9. In which novel do Rutherfurd's characters inherit the traits of their ancestors, even dozens of generations later?

Answer: Sarum

The men of the Mason family, for example, remain bald and stocky from the building of stonehenge right through until the 1980's!
10. According to Amazon.com, which has been Rutherfurd's best selling novel?

Although released 10 years earlier, 'Sarum' has been overhauled by the worldwide bestseller 'London'. Both 'Russka' and 'The Forest' have had modest sales in comparison.
