Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Bill Hodges when Pete called him about a murder/suicide scene he was working?

Answer: Doctor's office

Bill was there to get test results from his doctor, Dr. Stamos. Holly had urged him in to see the doctor after he suffered from recurring bouts of stomach pain. Pete called about the murder of Martine Stover, and the suicide of Martine's mother, Janice Ellerton. Martine had been left paralyzed after the mass murder at City Center by the Mercedes Killer. Janice had fed her daughter a mixture of pills and vodka, via her feeding tube.

Then, Janice killed herself.
2. Brady Hartsfield, the Mercedes Killer, was able to control people through a game console called Zappit.

Answer: True

Zappit was an antiquated handheld device like a Nintendo DS or Gameboy. Brady was first introduced to the toy during his time in the traumatic brain injury section of Kiner Hospital. The volunteer orderly, known as Library Al, had brought one to Brady to look at. Brady was unable to do much else since his blow to the head (by Holly Gibney in book one), so Al thought he might enjoy the pretty lights.
3. Brady contacted Bill once more through a social media site. What was the name of that site?

Answer: Under Debbie's Blue Umbrella

As in "Finders Keepers", Brady used the same site to contact Bill. He did so while inhabiting Al Brooks' body, and calling himself Z-Boy. Z-Boy was a persona Brady developed inside Al, who could be put to use as Brady needed. Setting up shop inside people slowly erased the original identity, so Brady had to be patient with the people with whom he had access. He couldn't overstay his welcome, so to speak.

The Dal Riata was the bar owned by Trick in the TV series "Lost Girl".
4. Dr. Felix Babineau used an experimental drug on Brady he called ______.

Answer: Cerebellin

Cerebellin (truly known as Number 649558) was not approved for use in the USA, and Babineau found Brady to be the perfect candidate for unauthorized trials. When it appeared to have no affect, Babineau decided to stop giving it to the killer. Later in the story, we learn from Brady's perspective that it was he who'd convinced the doctor the drug was not working. It obviously had worked, because the MRIs showed "unprecedented" repair to the damage inside Brady's brain. Brady couldn't let that get out, lest he be tried for all of his crimes.

Adravil was an OTC type of pain reliever created by the Umbrella Corporation in the "Resident Evil" franchise, Dittany was the healing drug used in the "Harry Potter" franchise, and Lot 6 was from another Stephen King story, "Firestarter".
5. After he'd successfully talked three woman into suicide, which of Bill's friends did Brady almost kill in the same manner?

Answer: Barbara Robinson

Barbara had escaped death at the 'Round Here concert in "Finders Keepers". But, Brady had organized a way to get the Zappit games to kids who'd been at the arena that night. Barbara had been "talked" into going to an area known as Lowtown, and to walk herself into oncoming traffic. A boy from Todhunter High had shoved her out of the way and she'd only suffered minor injuries. Brady had become impatient and rushed into harming Jerome Robinson's little sister. After the accident, Jerome returned from Arizona, where he'd been building homes with Habitat for Humanity. The boy who saved Barbara, Dereece Neville, came to visit her frequently after her accident. Brady had already talked nurses Sadie and Ruth into suicide, as well as Janice Ellerton.

Penny Kalisto is a character from "Odd Thomas" and Freddi was one of Brady's co-workers in book one, "Mr. Mercedes".
6. Which terminal illness was Bill Hodges diagnosed with in this book?

Answer: Pancreatic cancer

After he found out, he lied to Holly about it. But, she did some quick searching and discovered the truth. That truth, and Barbara's accident, brought Jerome home from Arizona. The three of them sought to uncover the connection behind the Zappit consoles and the suicides surrounding them.
7. When he was 12 years old Brady read a book about what man, which led to his fascination with suicide?

Answer: Reverand Jim Jones

The book was called "Raven", and it talked about how Jim Jones had basically hypnotized a mass of followers into believing death was a glamorous eventuality. This was based on the true story of a religious cult called the Peoples Temple. Brady was impressionable, and very smart, and the ability to control people into taking their own lives was his true desire.

He'd also planned for his own suicide, which would have happened if Holly hadn't stopped him from using an explosive during the concert.
8. How did Brady's original body die?

Answer: He overdosed himself with drugs

He installed himself inside Dr. Babineau's body and stayed inside so long that the doctor disappeared almost completely. Then, he used the doctor's body to go back to the hospital and into room 217. Once there, Brady left the doctor's body and went back inside his own body long enough to take an overdose mixture of Ambien and Vicodin (which he'd taken from Babineau's house).

After the overdose was taken care of, Brady left his body and re-entered the doctor's once more. He left the hospital and went to the hunting camp to finish his reign of suicides.
9. Was Freddi Linklatter killed?

Answer: No

Using his Dr. Z and Z-Boy agents, Brady had talked her into reprogramming the discontinued Zappit consoles. She was able to install a root kit that would allow the demo screen of "Fishin' Hole" to hypnotize people, and then later connect to an automatic download, after many more teens had their own Zappit games. Paying her had gone a long way to make her look the other way, and Brady had used Dr. Babineau's wealth to ensure the process. When he was done with Freddi, Brady shot her in the chest. But, thanks to a combination of a pack of cigarettes, a flask, and a tin of Altoids breath mints, the bullet was unable to get in deep enough to be fatal. When Bill, Jerome, and Holly had made the connection to Freddi, she told them the whole story, including the belief that Brady had learned how to body jump.

I guess Freddi was named in homage to Thomas Harris, Hannibal Lecter, or maybe King didn't even realize it, because her name was Fredrica Bimmel Linklatter. Fredrica Bimmel was one of Buffalo Bill's victims in "The Silence of the Lambs". And, I'm not sure I believe in coincidence.
10. Brady Hartsfield, once and for all and inside the body of Dr. Babineau, died on Bill Hodges' 70th birthday.

Answer: True

Bill and Holly went up to the Heads and Skins hunting camp to put an end to Brady. He was already using the Zappit updates to connect with people and had talked some into killing themselves. They were able to shut down his suicide promoting website with the help of the police computer techs, but they also had to stop him physically. They both explained to Jerome how he was not expendable, but they were. So, he reluctantly went home to be with his family. Barbara, who still had some of Brady's "slime" inside her head, frantically sent Jerome up there after Bill and Holly. Holly was badly injured and Bill was forced into the trance of "Fishin' Hole". Then, Bill received a text from his daughter Alison and the text tone snapped Bill back into reality. Holly shot Brady several times, but Brady got out of the cabin. It was Jerome who ran him over with Mr. Thurston's Tucker Sno-Cat and stopped Brady for good. But, it didn't kill him. Bill told Brady he had to kill himself. Brady, almost cut in half, needed help getting the gun to his own (Babineau's) head. The text was a "Happy 70th Birthday" message. Bill had forgotten it was his own birthday.

Thankfully, none of the trio faced any charges for the death of "Dr. Felix Banineau". Bill Hodges passed away eight months later in August of 2015.
